A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Gosh, I know you've been anxiously awaiting the March Calendar of Special Events, and especially interested in knowing what we're celebrating today. (Stay tuned - that's coming up right after the calendar.) : )

I don't know who designated these 'holidays' - I am only presenting them as I found them at www.maineiac.com - who knows where they got them!

March Holidays

From
"In the month of March, we celebrate the big one for the Irish but, of course, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day! However, March is not just for the wearin' o' the green..."

March is National Furniture Refinishing Month (Yippeeeeee!)
  • March 1 - National Pig Day and Peanut Butter Lover's Day (Mmmm, I LOVE peanut butter!)
  • March 2 - Old Stuff Day (I have a LOT of that!)

  • March 9 - Panic Day (Just one day for this?)
  • March 10 - Festival Of Life In The Cracks Day (Just where IS life in "the cracks" ???)
  • March 11 - Johnny Appleseed Day and Worship of Tools Day (And how, exactly, does one worship tools? Nevermind, I don't really want to know!)
  • March 12 - Alfred Hitchcock Day (This is cool!)
  • March 13 - Jewel Day (Maybe I'll get some fancy-schmancy ring with a beautiful jewel on it from my boyfriend today...Nah!)
  • March 14 - National Potato Chip Day (OhhhKAY!)
  • March 15 - Buzzard's Day and Everything You Think Is Wrong Day (What if we think we want to celebrate Buzzard's Day? Are we wrong??)
  • March 16 - Everything You Do Is Right Day (I know some people who celebrate this one EVERY day!!)
  • March 17 - Submarine Day and, of course, St. Patrick's Day!
  • March 18 - Supreme Sacrifice Day (This sounds kinda cool.)

  • March 22 - National Goof-off Day (I REALLY like this one! Do you think it's a paid holiday from work?)
  • March 23 - National Organize Your Home Office Day and National Chip and Dip Day(What's with the chips this month?)
  • March 24 - National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day (Mmmm!)
  • March 25 - Pecan Day and Waffle Day (MMMM!)
  • March 26 - Spinach Festival Day and Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (This one's been celebrated a LOT!)

  • March 28 - Something On A Stick Day (Anything???)
  • March 29 - Festival Of Smoke and Mirrors Day (???)
  • March 30 - I Am In Control Day (My other selves have March 5, so this one's for me!)
  • March 31 - Bunsen Burner Day (Why???) and National Clams On The Half Shell Day (WHY???)

* National "Joe" Day - March 27 - Those who hate their name have the right to have everyone they know call them "Joe" on this day.

* National Anthem Day - March 3 - On this day in 1931, President Hoover signed a bill making the Star Spangled Banner our National Anthem. In case you don't know all the words...

Oh say can you see,
By the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad strips and bright stars,
Through the parilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
Oh say does that Star Spangled
Banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

"(Just in case you're wondering, I didn't have to look up the lyrics, good American that I am...but don't ask me to sing the next three verses!)"

Old stuff? I love old stuff. I have a lot of old stuff....old house, old furniture, old pictures, old dishes, old clothes, old shoes, old habits....

Searching for just the right stuff for today, I asked the other sistahs if they would share some of their old stuff with us. Imagine my surprise when, one by one, each of them said they still have all their old prom dresses from high school! Bingo! We had the perfect Old Stuff for today's thread:

Thanks, Mixer!

1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me a FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

Going Out & Coming In

Read: Numbers 27:15-23

At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in. —Numbers 27:21

Bible In One Year: Numbers 26-27; Mark 8:1-21

The phrase "at his word" is used twice in Numbers 27:21 to emphasize how God would guide Israel. Joshua was to direct Israel to "go out" and "come in" based on what God told Eleazer the priest.

How often do we make a decision to go somewhere or do something based on our pride, personal ambition, or merely to keep busy? How often do we go only because someone we long to please asked us to go, rather than because we want to please the Lord? When we "go out" to pursue our own desires instead of following God's leading, we will be frustrated in our efforts and left empty and disappointed.

But when we go out at the Lord's prompting and direction, "at His word," He is responsible for the outcome. The result will be fruitful labor, whether we know it or not.

The time to "come in" is also ordered by the Lord. There are times to retreat—to pray, to fill our hearts with His Word, to rest our bodies.

We must come daily before our great High Priest, the Lord Jesus, and receive His instruction. If we bow before Him and ask for His guidance, He will help us to know what to do and when to do it. —David Roper

We need to take the time each day
To read God's Word and pray,
And listen for what He might say
To guide us on our way. —Sper

You can't go wrong if you follow God's lead.

TO A KEEPER

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy.
All that re-fixing, reheating, renewing,
I wanted just once to be wasteful.

Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away
Meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my Father died, and on that clear summer's night,
In the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the
pain of learning that sometimes there isn't anymore.

Sometimes, what we care about most gets
All used up and goes away...never to return.

So...while we have it...it's best we LOVE it...and care for it
And fix it when it's broken...and heal it when it's sick.

This is true for marriage and old cars
And children with bad report cards
And dogs with bad hips
And aging parents...and grandparents.

We keep them because they are worth it,
Because we are worth it....some things we keep.

Like a best friend that moved away,
Or a classmate we grew up with.

There are just some things that make life important,
Like people we know who are SPECIAL
And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thought I was a KEEPER
And then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way.

You're a Keeper!

Before I Go...

When my life has reached its very end, And I take that final breath; I want to know I've left behind, Some "good" before my death.

I hope that in my final hour, In all honesty I can say: That somewhere in my lifetime, I have brightened someone's day.

That maybe I have brought a smile To someone else's face, And made one moment a little sweeter While they dwelled here in this place.

Lord, please be my reminder And whisper softly in my ear ... To be a "giver," not a "taker," In the years I have left here.

Give to me the strength I need, Open up my mind and my soul That I might show sincere compassion, And love to others before I go.

For if not a heart be touched by me, And not a smile was left behind ... Then the life that I am blessed with, Will have been a waste of time.

With all my heart, I truly hope To leave something here on earth ... That touched another, made them smile And gave to my life ... worth.

(((((HUGS))))))) to all - I'm in the middle of attempting to survive Tuesday in Corporate heck. Be back when I can.

Talks have been on and off about ways to control the spam storms that affect all of us. The idea of e-mail postage is getting a closer look from Microsoft and Yahoo, the owners of the two largest e-mail systems in the world.

Last month, Bill Gates, Microsoft’s chairman, told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that spam wouldn't be a problem in a couple of years, in part because of systems that would require people to pay money to send e-mail. Yahoo is currently evaluating an e-mail postage plan being developed by Goodmail, a Silicon Valley startup company.

Currently, there is no cost or hurdle to sending e-mail. Yahoo’s manager for communications products, Brad Garlinghouse, is reported to be very intrigued by the idea of postage as it would force mailers to send only those offers that a significant number of people might buy.

The talks have included ideas about creating technology standards to help identify the senders of legitimate e-mail, thus forcing spammers to identify themselves or risk users discarding all anonymous e-mail.

One of the ideas being discussed is to allow each recipient to set the price for an e-mail to enter his or her mailbox. They would have the option to waive costs for friends, relatives, and other senders that the user wants to receive e-mail from.

Some experts have concerns that big-time spammers might still opt to pay the postage because of the income generated from mass mailings.

It is too bad that just a very small number in any group, as always, can ruin a great thing for every one else. Hopefully some of the best anti-spam ideas being discussed will be implemented so we can all live without tons of junk e-mail flooding our inboxes!

So don't be surprized to see some kind of developments along these lines in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the Texas Independence Day posts, Meg and Drew's Dad - I'm Texan, too, but figured there would be many other threads devoted to that today, and not everyone here is from Texas, believe it or not! LOL!

The March Calendar is just silly stuff, DD - sometimes we're serious, sometimes we're silly. Today we're silly. :)
