A .50 BMG AP woulndn't penetrate more than about 1 1/4" of steel and then only at close range I guess I was thinking more of the bucket in the Lethal Weapon movie, which couldn't have been more than 3/4" thick (probably less), rather than the "several inches of hardened steel" that the other poster mentioned.
