Isn't it true that the U.S. went into Iraq because the U.N. "sanctions" against the regime were breaking down and Iraq was selling more and more Oil on the market in exchange for Euros, threatening more destabilization of the U.S. dollar?

Just a thought....

Don't know about that. I never saw that theory. I'd still like to believe it was a anti-terror decision, rather than an economic one. The US was the biggest buyer of oil from Iraq under the Oil for Food program at one point, I don't know what happened after Saddam pulled his oil from the open market, and started to work through intermediaries who could use the oil to buy political support.

One issue that the UN could not control was that the guy running the Iraq side of the Oil for Food program was getting a kickback from the buyers, thus generating revenue to the Iraqi government outside of the program.
