• Presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) responded to the Vatican’s call for Catholic elected officials to oppose gay marriage by telling Rome to stay out of American politics. “It’s important not to have the church instructing politicians,” Kerry, a Catholic, told the Boston Herald.

Not everyone agrees. “Too many Catholic politicians want to have it both ways,” said former U.S. Ambassdor to the Vatican Raymond Flynn. “They want the Catholic vote, but then they go ahead and ignore Catholic teaching.”

Catholic lawmaker Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) has criticized the Pope John Paul II’s opposition to gay marriage, stating that “[i]t’s important not to have the church instructing politicians.”

• Former Rep. Rod Chandler (R-Wash.), who lost his bid for higher office to Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) in 1992, has decided to carry his message to a younger audience. Chandler, who has relocated to Las Vegas, is taking courses to qualify as a high school history teacher.

• At a kick-off banquet last Friday for the American Constitution Society, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) was praised for co-sponsoring some 200 pieces of legislation. But Clinton admitted she’s not always sure of what she’s signing on to.

For example, Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), a veterinarian by trade, once asked her to co-sponsor his bill banning cockfighting. “He gave me a brief description, as a veterinarian, why this was such a horrible thing, and how we need to stop these roosters from being transported back and forth across the borders,” said Clinton. It sounded like something she could support, so she said, “Why not?”

But some of her constituents, who come from Caribbean and Central American countries, love cockfighting.

Tabloids jumped on the story with front-page headlines. “Picture of me. Picture of a cock,” Clinton said. “I told Sen. Allard, this is a little bit hard to understand, how I could be the 51st senator [to co-sponsor the bill] and nobody else gets headlines.”
