The Kerry scandal?

February 13, 2004

BY MICHAEL SNEED SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Here we go again.

It's called the sex thing.

Dem presidential contender John Kerry's campaign may have been hit broadside. Please, pardon the pun.

It's no secret Kerry dated alotta women after his divorce from first wife Julia Thorne in 1988 and before he married Teresa Heinz in 1995.

But the first salvo in an alleged sexual drama came via Internet columnist Matt Drudge, author of the "Drudge Report," (which broke the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky mess) who claimed Thursday a Kerry scandal may be erupting. It allegedly involves Kerry's marital infidelity with a woman who once worked for the Associated Press -- and has reportedly fled the country at the prodding of Kerry.

True? Well, Sneed is told the real reason former Dem presidential nominee Al Gore did NOT select Kerry as his veepmate was because of allegations of women problems, or marital infidelity involving Kerry's marriage to Heinz, heiress to the Heinz Ketchup fortune, whom he met in 1990.

A top source tells Sneed Gore was talking about Kerry's sexual baggage "with a young woman" as recently as late last week!

"Kerry was the favorite to be Gore's veep, but they worried a female problem could erupt, so U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman was selected instead," said the source.

"In addition to Gore backing Howard Dean for president, because he wanted access to the cadre of Dean youth called the "Deanie babies" when he runs for president again and goes up against Hillary Clinton, Gore chose Dean because he feared the Kerry female mess would rear its ugly head," the source added.

Introduced to Kerry by her late husband, Pennsylvania Republican Sen. John Heinz -- who was killed in a plane crash in 1991 -- Teresa Heinz married Kerry after he signed a pre-nup. (Heinz owns five homes in the United States.)

The big question: Did Dean opt not to pull out of the race after the Wisconsin primary because he was waiting for the Kerry scandal to erupt?

And didn't Kerry linger longer at P.J. Clarke's pub than he should have while chatting it up with a member of the opposite sex during a visit to Chicago a few years back?

By the way, Thorne, Kerry's ex-wife, who has since married an architect, has written a book about depression called: You Are Not Alone.

Stay tuned.

Hmmmm . . .

Talk about a no-luck politician.

************ the former 21st Ward alderman who went to prison as a result of the Silver Shovel Operation scandal, doesn't seem to have a silver lining in his political comeback.

*To wit: Last year, Evans was knocked off the ballot in a bid to reclaim his aldermanic seat because he was still under court supervision from his prison sentence -- thereby making him ineligible to run.

*Last bit: On Thursday, the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners struck down Evans' candidacy for 21st Ward Democratic committeeman because his nominating petition didn't have enough valid signatures!

Maybe Evans should buy a truck?

A Crowe call . . .

Get a load of this one. The Aussie press claims "Dumb and Dumber" director Peter Farrelly is making a film about "The Three Stooges" and hopes to get actor Russell Crowe to play "Moe." Now there's a thought.

The bee buzz . . .

Now comes word actor Richard Gere, who tapped his way into our hearts in the film "Chicago," is taking up the violin in preparation for his role in the flick "Bee Season." Ah, to bee or not to bee.

Sneedlings . . .

Today's birthdays: George Segal, 70; Kim Novak, 71; Peter Tork, 62; Stockard Channing, 60; Jerry Springer, 60; Peter Gabriel, 54, and Mena Suvari, 25. Saturday's birthdays: Hugh Downs, 83; Rick O'Dell, priceless; Florence Henderson, 70; Meg Tilly, 44, and WMAQ-Channel 5's Natalie Martinez, ageless.

Michael Sneed is seen at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays on WMAQ-Channel 5.

From an earlier thread:

Senate Packwood Hearing Carries into Second Day

The Senate, facing an unprecedented confrontation with one of its members, wrestled Monday with whether to go to court to force Republican Sen. Bob Packwood of Oregon to turn over hundreds of pages of personal diaries as part of an ethics committee investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and possible criminal wrongdoing.

After seven hours of often tedious debate over legal technicalities and constitutional questions, the Senate retired for the night, its leaders vowing to vote sometime Tuesday on whether to support the committee's effort to obtain the diaries by subpoena.

So sensitive was the issue that by nightfall Monday no senator had openly defended Packwood, although several had raised legal points on his behalf. And while only a few indicated how they would vote, informal comments by others demonstrated that Packwood faces an uphill fight in his effort to persuade the Senate to side with him on privacy grounds.

"We are being tested here," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. "Let's tell the American people we are not going to cover up and we're not going to have a double standard.

Way off subject, I know, but after I read these, Kerry's first wife isn't the only one who's depressed! Peter Tork of the Monkees is in his sixties? And Mrs. Brady is seventy?

Definite Pop Culture Shock moment...

Since Gore knew about Kerry's baggage and was probably very unhappy that his man Dr.Demento was attacked to the point of almost being nullified as a candidate, it's not much of a leap to think that Gore, not Clark-Clinton, released the Kerry bombshell. This news may resurrect Dean and allow Gore to recapture his Demo power base.

It is strange that this does look like it has clintonslime all over it. Is it possible that the Divinity School dropout could actually be smart enough to perform the illusion with such grace?

I'm not sure I can believe that. Gore has proven himself to me to be a political idiot, however being screwed over by the clintons (an living) could wise him up a bit.

In either case, I like the way you think. Very interesting theory you have there.

Is this the first story on this in the American media (save Drudge and Rush)? If so, they seemed to have pulled it. I got a "Page not found" on the link.

It's in the print edition of the Sun-Times today. I think we need to step back and watch for Kerry's psychotic wife to do her thing.

After being in a slop bucket for eight years it's impossible to emerge without some "stuff" clinging to your shoes.

Even a dolt would be able to figure out how to fling it after seeing how it's been so effectively done.Who stands to gain the most if Kerry fails? Dean-gore.

I hope so.

If there is no Senate double-standard, and if these allegations against Kerry are true, then the Senate should expel him just as they did Bob Packwood.

And, remember, Newt resigned because he was having an affair -- and then his replacement (that fellow from Louisiana) also had to resign because of an affair he had had years earlier.

We gotta quit rolling over for these Dems allowing them to flaunt their lousy, situational ethics in our faces.

Hmmm, looks like Sneed's "top source" even managed a classic two-fer, also managing to slime Gore's motives a little bit: see, Gore only endorsed Dean over Kerry 'cause he'll need all the help he can get from the useful Deanbots when he runs against Saint Hillary, don'tcha know.

Heck, I just read it again and it's actually a THREE-fer! While the main point is to torpedo Kerry, it also takes a dig at Dean by implying that Gore obviously would have endorsed Kerry over Dean had it not been for Kerry's "ugly mess."

So much mud slung in one little sentence. Must be just a coincidence that the only Dem the "top source" doesn't manage to slime as a Presidential candidate is Hillary...

I'm sure Gore is fully capable of flinging slime, I'm just not sure he's savvy enough to make it look like it was someone else. Especially considering that the thirstiest koolaid drinkers are now writing stories of how it could be the GOP that tipped off the press, as if they didn't already know.

Most likely Edwards will be the big winner if the slime sticks to Kerry. Although without someone cutting Kerry off at the knees Dean is a goner, this could give him some second wind but he will have to come roaring back if he expects to win the nomination.

One thing is certain, if the new frontrunner gets slimed, there will be no doubt it is the clintons.

Just for the record, Kerry denies the bimbo allegations absolutely on Imus. Nothing is there, Nothing will come up.
