Qadeer not granted blanket pardon: FO

""ISLAMABAD: Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has not been granted a blanket pardon and may face further questioning, said Foreign Office spokesman Masood Khan on Monday.

"Investigation into the nuclear proliferation to other states is still going on," he explained. He repeatedly pointed out at his press conference that the pardon granted to Dr Qadeer related only to last week’s televised confessional statement.

Officials also stress that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is not in danger of falling into the hands of extremists. Masood said the pardon given to Dr Qadeer is ‘conditional’ and related just to his confession made so far. The Foreign Ministry in fact did not rule out any more disclosure in the ongoing negotiation.

Sounds like hype.

Radiological device = chemical explosives spread some sort of radioactive powder around. The radioactive energy would generally come from radioactive sources used in medicine and industry.

"Dirty bomb" = an incomplete chain reaction in weapons grade fissionable material of some sort instantly cooks the relatively inert fissionables into an awful witches' brew of highly radioactive, short-half life, isotopes while releasing enough energy to "powder" and spread them around a moderately wide area.

There might be some xSoviet nukes around whose fissionables were cooked 1989-1991 and so could serve as "dirty bombs", but none would be "suitcase" nukes which require lots of expensive maintenance as well as the finest grade of xSoviet fissionables.

IMO this is just the press being clueless, and careless with terminology. I remember one of them in 1991 labeling as a tank what was really a Saudi street sweeper truck used to clean foreign objects off airfield runways.

I would have to listen closely, I thought he implied he was involved.

I think this (the nuclear network ) is what he has been hinting at for a long time!!!

Said he had turned much information over to Sandy Berger!!!

Didn't he confirm an earlier article posted on FR about 'special teams' (nuclear) in Pakistan?

Not sure about that... I was distracted ..

I saw a legitimate news article last week in USA Today (I think) that said we had special ops in Pakistan securing the nukes. If true, it's shocking we would let the enemy know our special op troops were there.

Maybe we do know where the WMDs are and are keeping them under surveilance so we can track them. Or wait for some big fish to attempt to retrieve them. There's a lot going on in Iraq that we are unaware of. If we put our every move on TV for the enemy to see we will never catch them. The element of surprise will be non existent.

He's been going a little overboard lately - maybe a media thing; after all, he's expected to come up with this juicy stuff - but he's likely right more than Lybia, Iran and DPRNK were sold nuke technology. Most of us could have figured that out by making an educated projection. As for the securing of the Paki nukes, the pakis themselves said they were doing that.

Yup. Sounds like Dr Mohammad Farooq is 'dropping the dime' on Khan. Both trying to get the best deal.(?)

I think this action is outside of Iraq...Pakistan, Afghanistan and who know where else.

I wished Britt would have gone back to him after the break!

I think that he did not because it is late over there. Brit thanked him for staying late to do what he did.

This morning on F&F, Maj Gen Vallely was on. He talked like the WMD were not in Iraq, but we knew where, and it would be released soon. Yesterday, I heard something about Tony Blankley smiling about upcoming news. Anybody else hear any of this, or more?

I did read about these teams somewhere today...

How did they put it...." The US has sent people into Pakistan to help ensure their nuclear program is secure...."

In other words there are US experts crawling all over the Paki nukes.

I hate to post this, because I don't remember the name. I think is was on The Big Story. The guy was talking about the complete lack of cooperation from the USA Arab community in helping find AQ cells that are local. Your location made me want to mention this.

There's something that's been bothering me since this guy was arrested. If he was selling them - rather, the tech and equipment - to Iran and Lybia, why not Saddam too? Ideological thing? Or DID he sell the stuff to Saddam too?

Honestly, Saddam has always been more of a Biblical Plague kinda guy...he was interested in nukes yes, but leery of technology. He doesn't understand it very well. Therefore, I was less worried about him and nukes than other countries...BUT...if he could aquire a working product, he probably would have. So yeah, this bothers me.
