Instead, she was re-elected to Huntington Park City Council in 1999 with more votes than any other candidate.
Inquiring minds want to know. Just how is that Marin beat these tremendous odds?
For the answer to that question and also why she isn't getting support from the California's Republican elite do a search on the web for Spanish language articles that covered her re-election campaign rhetoric.
Here is an intro from a Spanish Article:
La ex tesorera de Estados Unidos, la mexicana Rosario Marín, anunció de manera oficial aquí su candidatura para contender el próximo año por un escaño del Senado federal por California. La senadora demócrata Bárbara Boxer...
Here is the google translation:
The ex- treasurer of the United States, the Mexican Marín Rosary, announced her official candidacy as contender next year for federal Senate for California. Democratic senator Barbarian Boxer
How Fitting!
Bless Google. At least their trying to do their part.
Actually la mexicana with a small "m" translate as "the female of Mexican origin". It does not necessarily mean a Mexican national.
Or maybe Google knows something we don't since they store a great deal of old network traffic. Maybe they still have articles that were purged because of embarrassment, when Marin became prominent.

Latino Councilwoman Survives Challenge Despite Tie to WilsonBy all indications, Rosario Marin should have taken a beating when she recently ran for a second term on the Huntington Park City Council.
After all, Marin had been Gov. Pete Wilsons liaison to the Latino community for the last two years. She was the Spanish voice of an administration that was characterized by many Latino leaders as being anti-immigrant for Wilsons support for Propositions 187 and 227.
In Huntington Park--a city that is 92% Latino and predominantly Democrat--Wilson is not a popular figure.
(snip)
Her critics, however, say she misled voters by glossing over her relationship to Wilson.
She would never tell people she was involved with Pete Wilson because that would be a negative, said Councilman Tom Jackson, a Marin critic who sent out about 3,000 campaign mailers with photos of Marin alongside Wilson.
Only one of the 10 campaign mailers that Marin sent during the campaign mentioned Wilson. In several other campaign pieces, Marin is pictured with Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy and President Bill Clinton.
But perhaps the biggest factor in Marins victory were the endorsements of several local Democratic Latino leaders, such as state Sen. Richard G. Polanco, Assemblyman Marco Antonio Firebaugh and Congressman Xavier Becerra.
(snip)
During the campaign, Marin was forced to make clear her own position on Proposition 187, which sought to cut services to illegal immigrants; Proposition 227, the anti-bilingual education initiative; and Proposition 209, which targeted affirmative action programs.
(snip)
Marin said she has always opposed Proposition 187 because she believes that it would hurt immigrant children. She said she opposed 209 because minority businesses are still at a disadvantage in getting public contracts. As for Proposition 227, the measure to eliminate bilingual education, Marin would only say that she did not support it.
(snip)
Marin, who worked in a bank before becoming a full-time childrens advocate, came to the attention of the Wilson administration through her work for disabled children. Her work won her the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy award in 1995.
California's current financial crisis is driven by two principal factors. The escalating size of an entitled class and a liberal governance that continually enlarges the entitlements through legislation.
The liberal governance is almost exclusively provided by Democrats and the escalating size of the class is due almost exclusively to the long term consequences of illegal immigration.
Take away either and you substantially reduce California's current predicament.
Marin is one of the stanchest defenders of the "positive" effect illegal immigration has had on California. From my perspective a vote for Marin would only be fractionally better than returning Boxer to office.

Mayor's remarks rile Hispanics
The Anglo mayor of Huntington Park, a city that is 92 percent Hispanic, may face a City Council vote to strip him of his ceremonial title because of comments he made about Mexican immigrants at a recent meeting.
Two of Mayor Tom Jacksons fellow council members, Rosario Marin and Ric Loya, are angry about comments he made during a discussion two weeks ago about a state bill to help immigrants get drivers licenses, the Los Angeles Times reported.
According to a tape recording, Jackson said:
We have to come to the realization that the entire country of Mexico cannot come to California, and if we make it tough for them to come here, they wont come. . . . They have their country and we have our country and we cannot constantly be doing something to make their life easier.
Jackson, who has been on the council for 32 years and has been mayor 10 times, said the criticism by Marin and Loya is politically motivated.

For fellow council member Rosario Marin, a native of Mexico City, the issue was personal.
The essence of government is to improve the quality of life of the people it serves, not to make it more difficult, fumed Marin. Hes talking about them, which is us, which is me and my parents and my brothers.
The controversy died down after Jackson resigned the ceremonial mayorship although he remains on the council. But the issue reverberates wherever immigrants are displacing the dominant culture. The clash in Huntington Park only shows us that people dont easily let go of their lifestyles, or their attitudes.

Comments by Mayor Infuriate Latinos
(snip)
Angry colleagues cant remove him from the council, but on Monday two council members hope to call for a vote to strip Jackson of the ceremonial position of mayor.
Jackson is one of the few remaining white elected officials in the heavily Latino cities of southeast Los Angeles County. In the last 25 years, the region has undergone a dramatic demographic shift from a largely white middle-class population to a heavily Latino working-class population.
It has been only in the last 10 to 15 years that the elected leadership has begun to reflect that shift. In Huntington Park, the transition to a mostly Latino leadership has been relatively smooth--until now.
The mayor represents the council and I want the people to know that he doesnt represent me at all, said Councilwoman Rosario Marin, a native of Mexico who, along with Councilman Ric Loya, supports removing Jackson from the mayoral post.

Hay hay, Ho ho, Barbara Boxers gotta GO!!!
I wanna hear alla them snide remarks about Jones bein a "career politician" that I heard directed at McClintock during the Recall from "The Posse!!!"
Calling Jones "a conservative" is a gross misnomer!!!
The ONLY "conservative" in this bunch, that doesn't want gargantuan government is Kalugian!!! (I know how to spell his name well enough to vote for him!)
Since Arnold endorsed him, I would think many of his positions will be consistent.... the feds should pay more, drivers licenses are okay if we have security measures, etc. He was a McCain supporter... so I'd assume he likes the guest-worker plans, but not sure.
Here is his candidate statement:
California needs responsible new leadership in the United States Senate. Our citizens deserve to be represented by someone who rejects the failed big government policies of tax, spend and regulate. As your Senator, I will share your commitment to rebuilding California's economic engine, creating jobs, improving our schools and protecting the quality of our air and water. I authored California's tough "Three Strikes Law" which keeps dangerous repeat felons behind bars. You can always count on me to defend our communities from crime. I will also be a passionate and unwavering supporter of the President's leadership in the war against terrorism. We need an effective taxpayers' advocate in the Senate. The federal government has a responsibility to help California deal with the growing costs of illegal immigration. They have also short-changed California taxpayers, returning approximately 70 cents of every dollar we send to Washington. My many years of experience as California's Secretary of State and as a leader in the State Assembly have given me the skills to work with the President and Congress on these issues and I will get results. I am a second generation Californian who has been blessed with the opportunity to combine a successful career as a farmer and a businessman with public service. California is truly the greatest state in the greatest nation on earth. We need leaders with the vision, courage and skills to overcome our current challenges and restore the California Dream. With your support, I will provide this kind of leadership.

I was lectured on another thread as to supporting the gargantuan government bonded indebtedness as the Governor must have it to make the President look good in CA this fall.
Well!!! The Governator sure din't even git ta first base with El Presidente Bush on that "short-changed" business, OR the growing cost of illegal immigration.
So I see a gargantuan disconnect in the lecturing and any such connection. This is really getting bizarre!!! I'm seeing less and less of the "consistency" you referred to, even among the new muscled up "moderate wing" of the Repellican Party. It's getting embarrassing!!!
That SuperHero celebrity cape is turning into the typical "cloaking device" for Bill Jones! The only consistent conservative in this field of four is Howard, who'll send the right message to "The District!" We're never gonna fool Californians that a "sortofaconservative" is best because the Dems will "like" him/her! What consistent BUNK!!!
Yep. After him (based on Candidate statements only), we could vote for Barry Hatch.
Who's Barry Hatch?. He's the Republican conservative who can't beat Boxer. Howard is the one who CAN!
REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES FOR U.S. SENATOR
Candidate Name Party Danney Ball Republican Toni Casey Republican Barry L. Hatch Republican Bill Jones Republican Howard Kaloogian Republican Rosario Marin Republican Bill Quraishi Republican James Stewart Republican Tim Stoen Republican John M. Van Zandt Republican
Marin would be lucky to get 35% against Boxer.
Brooke Coleman (of REAP, an NGO) is on The Reformulated Fuel Association, and is a close colleague of the Koehler Brothers. Neil Kohler is the head of Parallel Products, which is a division of US Liquids, headquartered in Houston. Tom Kohler is principal in Celilo Media Group which has offices in St. Paul, Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. They "pretend" to be from Davis, CA where they have a brother Paul living, but in point of fact, they both live in Portland, OR. Neil is also the President of Kinergy Resources, LLC, an energy policy advisor to major corporations and governments. The Kohlers are big boys in the ethanol industry with heavy connections through the Reformulated Fuel Association to Archer Daniels Midland. They have picked up Bill Jones, as a partner in one of their companies, Pacific Ethanol. Bill Jones as quoted in the San Joaquin Valley News, wants to grow corn for fuel.
BTW, there is now suspicion that bio-diesel produces methyl nitrate as a byproduct of combustion. Methyl nitrate is the principal irritant from combustion of MTBE, the use of which caused asthma rates to nearly double.
