[history]
Adm. Thomas Hinman Moorer, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a 41-year U.S. Navy veteran, died Thursday of an undisclosed illness. He was 91.
A stalwart believer in traditional Navy codes and devotion to duty and country, Adm. Moorer remained true to his values during a sterling career punctuated by civil and cultural upheaval here and abroad.

Thanks for the post and thank you, Jennifer, for the article. As to the last paragraph, many of those commentaries were posted here on FR, sometimes more than once, and triggered wonderful debates and comments. There is a good deal more that he worked on that was never published. What I will miss most is his wonderfully insightful growliness. He could cut through the fog of strategic matters with a single remark, and often did.
In one of his last comments to me, with his legs going, he swore he was going to go fishing in Alaska this year again with his brother as he always did.
As his legs continued to give him problems, when you asked how he was feeling, he would growl: "OK, but not too mobile."
On one of the last occasions when we were to get together to go over drafts, he interrupted it to go hunting on a surprise emergent basis with Ollie North, seizing the opportunity. Later he said: "As long as I can sit, I'm going to keep on hunting and fishing."
Home is the sailor, home from the sea
and the hunter home from the hill.

Thanks for the article.
That great man was a friend of Poland, as well. He willingly answered every question from young, Polish journalist calling him sometimes early morning (because of time difference). He would patiently explain the issue and give his wise comment. I will always remember him as a great American hero. Tom from Poland
