Man Behind Bush AWOL Charge Is John Edwards Supporter
FEC ^ | February 5, 2004 | N/A

Posted on 02/05/2004 6:11:58 AM PST by Hon

The man who is almost single-handedly behind the story that Bush was AWOL is William Turnipseed of Alabama.

Here is an excerpt from one story recently posted here at FR:

"The media is now re-examining the story, though, and the Bush-haters are quite happy about it. As this story in today's Washington Post indicates, there is plenty of evidence Bush was not AWOL from his Guard duties. Indeed, one of the foundational pieces of the Bush-haters' lie is the failure of a colonel in Alabama to recall Bush ever being on post.

Reached in Montgomery yesterday, Turnipseed stood by his contention that Bush never reported to him. But Turnipseed added that he could not recall if he, himself, was on the base much at that time."

Look at all of the Google hits you get on Turnipseed, and you'll see he is behind most (if not all) of the stories:

So what are Turnipseed's politics you might ask? This is from the FEC site:

TURNIPSEED, WILL MONTGOMERY, AL 36123

EDWARDS, JOHN VIA EDWARDS FOR PRESIDENT 06/16/2003 500.00 23991408229

Of course being a contributor to someone running for the Democrat nomination to oppose Bush doesn't necessarily make him a liar.

But I think it does put what he says in some context. Especially since he has no documentation to back up his claims.

This guy is right up there with the 'rat functionary who pushed the 20 year old DWI story into the media. I hope he enjoys the "attention" he gets.

BTW, when you search Google for Tunipseed and AWOL you get 949 hits:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Turnipseed%20AWOL

He is the epicenter of this story. I don't think it is an accident.

Peter Jennings is behind this non-story.

Remember, he hates American power, and a Kerry/UN/Soros ticket will suit the elite lib media just fine.

Have to agree with you on Jennings. From the moment the words tripped out of his mouth at the debate I knew it was a set up.

Jennings had two objectives, repeat the story and give it national prominence and use it to undermine Clark.

From a Newsmax story recounting how the NY Times debunked the AWOL charge:

In July 2000 the Times noted that Bush's chief accuser in the Globe report, retired Gen. William Turnipseed, had begun to back away from his story that Bush never appeared for service during the time in question.

"In a recent interview," said the Times, "[Turnipseed] took a tiny step back, saying, 'I don't think he did, but I wouldn't stake my life on it.'" In fact, military records obtained by the Times showed that Turnipseed was wrong and that the Globe had flubbed the story.

"A review by The Times showed that after a seven-month gap, he appeared for duty in late November 1972 at least through July 1973," the paper noted on Nov. 3, 2000.

The Times explained:

"On Sept. 5, 1972, Mr. Bush asked his Texas Air National Guard superiors for assignment to the 187th Tactical Recon Group in Montgomery [Alabama] 'for the months of September, October and November,'" so Bush could manage the Senate campaign of Republican Winton Blount.

"Capt. Kenneth K. Lott, chief of the personnel branch of the 187th Tactical Recon Group, told the Texas commanders that training in September had already occurred but that more training was scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8 and Nov. 4 and 5."

After the Bush AWOL story had percolated for months, Col. Turnipseed finally remembered another glitch in his story: the fact that National Guard regulations allowed Guard members to miss duty as long as it was made up within the same quarter.

And, in fact - according to the Times - that's what Bush did.

"A document in Mr. Bush's military records," the paper said, "showed credit for four days of duty ending Nov. 29 and for eight days ending Dec. 14, 1972, and, after he moved back to Houston, on dates in January, April and May."

The paper found corroboration for the document, noting, "The May dates correlated with orders sent to Mr. Bush at his Houston apartment on April 23, 1973, in which Sgt. Billy B. Lamar told Mr. Bush to report for active duty on May 1-3 and May 8-10."

If the President had been AWOL he would have been brought up on charges and either convicted (likely) or acquitted. Those types of records do not disappear. That record would be the hottest piece of paper in town if it existed. If it did exist it would already be plastered on the front page of the New York Times in 4 inch type. If the President was brought up on charges there would be people that would damn well remember the charges and inquest.

We have the word of one man, Colonel Turnipseed. We have nothing else to back up the claim.
1. No records of this>
2. No one stepping forward about charges>
3. During the last election Al Gore had the entire Federal Government at his disposal. If those records existed he would have found them and destroyed Bush with them.

Colonel Turnipseed is either confused about what happened or Colonel Turnipseed is DAMNED LIAR. I suspect the latter.

I'm sure it is just a coincidence, but there is a Tom Turnipseed who is a member of the DNC's executive committee:

"I think the economic situation can allow us to bring back voters," said Tom Turnipseed, a longtime Democratic activist in South Carolina and a one-time member of the party's executive committee."

"I help feed the homeless and the line is getting longer. And it's black and white in the line. If the economy gets bad enough and it effects enough people both black and white, affluent and working class, they are going to have a hard time supporting Republicans.

"Democrats have a chance to carry several Southern states I really believe that," he said. "I think our candidates are skillful enough in projecting the message that we have a good chance to carry some states."
