First in an occasional series of profiles of the front-running Republican candidates seeking the nomination for the U.S. Senate.

Howard Kaloogian, dosing himself with cold medicine, says he feels miserable, but you wouldn't know it from the way he's bouncing around the office of his campaign consultant, Sal Russo.

I think I like Kaloogian. But he should distance himself from Islamist champion Grover Norquist, whose endorsement appears on Kaloogian's website.

Kaloogian is definitely selling his feistiness.

The pics of him from the Bee story:

Howard Kaloogian The San Diego Republican says he should take on Sen. Barbara Boxer because a "nice guy" would lose.

GOP Senate hopeful Howard Kaloogian says anger with Republican officials spurred his first run for the state Assembly in 1994. He was forced out by term limits in 2000.

I got yer back!

Let's spread 'em out through the day, too.

I hear that the CRA ended up making no endorsement in the Senate race because neither Jones nor Kaloogian could quite get enough votes. Casey and Marin (snicker) weren't factors.

I'll attribute that to everyone KNOWING Howard is the genuine article, but Jones has a more complete statewide machine, and a following he's accrued over his years in the Assembly and as Sec. of State.

Ah well. Talk radio destroyed Davis, it can propel Howard just the same!

I think your characterization of the situation with CRA was correct.

But things seem to be shaping up for Howard to have a legitimate shot at a four week run here to surpass Jones. We've started to notice people paying attention to the race, and responding to Howard on the issues.

Also, people don't seem to think Jones can beat Boxer. The more liberal GOPers who feel this tell us they like "Marin's story" and the more conservative GOPers join our ranks.

Casey's spending A LOT of money on phone calls and fundraising mailers... but she still seems to have trouble with her message: The woman Republican who was a Clinton Democrat, who supported the Bush 'Amnesty-Guest Worker' Plan who now diametrically opposes the plan one week later, and she's gonna cut spending too.

It's like Casey's trying to be a little bit of all the candidates... interesting to watch.

"Talk radio is most influential when it demonizes a candidate or an issue," Hodson said. "If it were to demonize Bill Jones, that could have a real impact in the primary. But demonizing him will not be easy because he is so widely regarded as a man of integrity and honor, and a nice guy."

I suggest y'all nominate a man of integrity and honor, and a nice guy to boot.

He may sound fiesty now, but what happens if he gets elected? Will he fold like Arnold? My guess is YES.

ALL Politicians LIE, it's in their genes.

He's also added my name to the endorsements list! That's pretty cool.

(OK, it's misspelled, but it happens all the time)
