Linebacker levels Super Bowl streaker (no, it was not Janet Jackson)

Edited on 04/13/2004 2:45:41 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

The second-half kickoff of the Super Bowl was delayed after a man dressed as a referee ran onto the field, stripped down to a G-string and shoes, then started dancing at the 30-yard line.

New England linebacker Matt Chatham leveled the man, identified as Mark Francis Roberts, as he ran from security personnel. The 39-year-old Roberts, who had the name of a gambling Web site scribbled across his chest, was hogtied and carried off the field by police.

CBS didn't air the intruder to the worldwide television audience

Too bad they didn't have the same sense for Janet Jackson's stunt.

"He is telling police he's from Liverpool, England. He also claims he is an international streaker and that he has done this at other sporting facilities," Aponte said.

I think those across the pond are very familair with this lad !

I wonder if this is the guy who streaked that golf tournament with "19th Hole" painted on his back and the arrow pointing to his wazoo?

Yes Mark Roberts is rather internationally known, streaking at major sporting event throughout the world, soccer matches, tennis tournaments at Wimbledon and last year's French Open men's final.

Same guy this time around.

What did Janet do? I couldn't stomach any of the halftime show, so I was cleaning up the kitchen.

I did catch Kid rock wearing our flag in retreat though. Don't these a-holes have any brains at all?

She said... his referee outfit was held together with Velcro, making it easy for him to rip it off in one movement.

I hear there's a lot of that going around

That's what I was thinking!! I remember seeing something on this guy on the HBO show with Bryant Gumbel. If I remember correctly he's even streaked in front of the Queen or some of the royal family at a sporting event or something

I forget the year, but it was Ditka's last. He was with Dallas or Minn. as I recall. It was a pre-season game in LA. Ditka's team was in the huddle. A fan ran n the field and passed by the huddle. Ditka extended a forearm, clotheslined the guy and he flipped over. Standing O from the LA fans.

Aside from the fact that he was wearing it instead of waving it, he was even wearing it backwards, as it would be viewed in retreat.

The blue field of stars should always be on the left. When it is displayed on the right, it signifies retreat.

It's too bad they stopped teaching flag etiquette in schools.

Just for your reference, Kid Rock supported the war in Iraq. He did not join many of his fellow artists

At a pre-Grammy party, Kid answered a reporter's question about the War in Iraq, and made it clear that he isn't part of the music industry's anti-war faction. "Why is everybody trying to stop the war? George Bush ain't been saying, 'You all, make sh*#%y records.' Politicians and music don't mix. It's like whiskey and wine. We ought to stay out of it."

It will be hard for CBS to pursue legal action against a streaker who apparently showed less than their own star performer.

All in all, this was one of the best Super Bowls in a few years. I think if CBS drops MTV for their musical talent and picks up a couple of real artists, even the halftime show may return somewhat to normal. I did notice that the two rappers were lip syncing. One of them lowered his mike and the line went on for a few more seconds

No wonder the CBS camera crews didn't show him. Fortunately it delayed the kick off long enough so I didn't miss it.

Baltimore linebacker Mike Curtis also got one in the early 70s. Smart aleck guy runs on the field and picks up the ball. Curtis flattens the fan causing a fumble. The fan doesn't bother to retrieve the ball as he slowly staggers off the field.

I don't believe that's correct. Depending on which side of the flag you're standing, the blue will be on the left or right. That's why on some flight suits, the flag patch, depending on which arm it's on, always has the blue toward the front. Got a reference?

The fact that he was wearing it "in retreat" means nothing to most people, all they saw was an entertainer who was proud to display the American flag. Rare as that is, it is shooting ourselves in the foot to complain that he violated "flag etiquette" while being patriotic. I am going by pictures only, I took a pizza break during the halftime show, so if he did something deliberately disrespectful of the flag, that is a different story.

I can remember when it was disrespectful to "wear the flag" at all. It only became "acceptable" to wear it after the filthy hippies wore it to protest the Viet Nam war. (They wore it to SHOW disrespect.)

As far as the flag being "in retreat" when viewed with the blue field on the right, that's just how I was raised. I guess that's a question for a veteran. My father taught me that, but I may be wrong.

I gotta admit I just plain think kid rock is an ugly no talent bum, so maybe I was looking to find fault with him. I think the entire halftime show sucked, and I was just LISTENING to it while cleaning up the kitchen.

Personally, I'd rather be tranquilized than nailed by a linebacker. I saw Mike Curtis of the Baltimore Colts go after a guy who ran onto the field and grabbed the football. That was a big trend for a couple of years. He flattened the guy like an eighteen wheeler hitting a Toyota.

So you think the NFL is tough? Tell them to take off their helmets and heavy pads, and then they might have a taste for what Rugby is about. He He He ....

They're no angels in the outfield

When fans hit the playing surface, wild times ensue

By Ryan Ernst
The Cincinnati Enquirer

"...One of the first and most entertaining incidents of fans taking to the field came in Baltimore in 1970. A fan drunker than Fenwick in Diner ran on the Memorial Stadium field during a Colts game and thought it would be funny to scoop up the ball and run. And it was. Problem was, linebacker Mike Curtis thought it would be funnier if the guy caught the business end of a WWF-style clothesline tackle. And it was. Curtis' take on the encounter: "The guy broke a city ordinance, and I enforced it." That's Eastwoodesque."

I still remember one interview he did on it. He said "If you're carrying the ball on my field, you're gonna pay for it." The Colts always seemed so much tougher when they were in Baltimore. I think it has to do with the domed stadium. Course, Bubba Smith, Mike Curtis and the Mad Stork didn't hurt, either.

I'm lifting this from another thread.

Freeper Hillary's Lovely Legs nailed it!

"He cut a hole in the middle of the flag and wore it like a poncho. How in the world is that not offensive?"

And as Freeper DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet pointed out:

"He clearly just cut up a flag to make himself a poncho. And then he whipped it off and handed it to one of the other guys who crumpled it up and tossed it on the drum stage."

Kid rock may "support" the war in Iraq, but he's still an ignorant a-hole with no talent. He sucked just as bad as the rest of the halftime "entertainment".

Nope, he is a opportunist streaker. Rugby matches, soccer ( football) matches , marathons , Tour De France , swimming events, tennis events, etc..... The list is long. This is the first time I think he has hit anything in the US though.

But one thing has bothered me about this deal. How in the world did he get on the field? Or even in the building. He came in with a valid ticket, but the nut was dressed as a ref !! You would think someone would have had a few questions for him coming in dressed like that. I would have thought security would have been very tight at a event like this. Yet this nut waltzed right in and got on the field.

Makes you kind of wonder if it wasn`t a set-up by the event coordinators. Food for thought.

US Code Chapter 1 the Flag:

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
