ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sen. John Edwards had a penknife confiscated as part of a stepped up security search that caused a one-hour delay for the Democratic presidential candidate and others boarding his chartered plane.
Albuquerque security officials gave extensive screenings to those traveling with the senator, including hand inspections of everyone's luggage and carry-on bags.
"We must look dangerous," joked the North Carolina Democrat, who was forced to go through a metal detector along with other passengers, and to have all his bags X-rayed, before being allowed to board his campaign plane.
A small knife was confiscated from Edwards' luggage. "It was a pocket knife," Edwards said. "I didn't even know it was there." He said he was told it would be returned to him later.
A pair of scissors, tweezers and assorted small tools used by photographers and television cameramen also were confiscated. The extra scrutiny, which was not explained, caused Edwards to be an hour late for his next scheduled appearance, a speech at a union hall in Oklahoma City.
About three dozen people are traveling on Edwards' plane, most of them members of the news media.

I'm guessing he'll sue - it being his nature.

Edwards will now sue. It's his new campaign financing strategy.

For a guy who claims to know all about the "regular people" he certainly doesn't know what we have to go through when we fly. But I guess millionaire trial lawyers flying around on their private jets don't have to put up with the kind of thing we lesser folk do when it comes to airport security.

His penknife? He's a trial lawyer. They should have taken his pen.

This looks like a clear "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. If you do, John Edwards can complain about how airport security is a ridiculous inconvenience to normal people, and that is all that Bush has done to protect the homeland. If you don't, John Edwards can complain that airport security was so lax that he was able to get prohibited items through with ease.
He a lawyer. Do you trust him with *anything*???

Yet another Democrat who thinks the rules don't apply to them. Was Edwards asleep when the post 9/11 airport security measures were announced?

I respectfully disagree, this is about how typical bureaucrats make no allowance for common sense. John Edwards although a Democrat is no threat to public safety and taking his penknife does not make me any safer.
But we must kowtow now to another level of bureaucracy, who by law can make no distinction between Grandma and a Saudi Arabian fresh off the boat.

He said he was told it would be returned to him later. First time I've heard of that happening. All the normal people he claims to represent lose their stuff for ever!

LOL, my cousin asked me to go with her to Philadelphia International Airport yesterday. She is going on a trip later in the month and wanted to make sure she was familiar with the area.
I almost fell over when she asked a security guard if she could go to the mall area of the airport, because we were doing a "dry run."
