Here's something I don't understand about the whole conservation process. Why do they spend $millions on protecting elephants & rhinoceroses in Africa? They give every ranger an AK-47 so that they can shoot PEOPLE, trying to protect these animals. Why don't we just tranquilize every last elephant/rhino/whatever and cut off their horns, store the ivory & sell it, and use that money to fund conservation efforts? That elephant doesn't need those horns any more -- a guy with an AK-47 can certainly protect him better than those horns. And no one is going to poach an elephant that doesn't have horns. We could even make money selling safari trips to people who want the privilege of shooting a big animal with a tranquilizer dart.
