President Bush, speaking last night in front of a packed house of campaign donors, celebrities, local relatives and one conspicuous lieutenant governor in Greenwich, defended his record on the economy and the war with Iraq and said he would not rest until terrorism is defeated.
In his sixth visit to Connecticut -- and second to Greenwich -- as president, Bush raised $1.1 million for his re-election campaign with the 30-minute stump speech at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.
"The enemies of freedom are not idle and neither are we," said Bush, who was interrupted by applause more than a dozen times.
....
Bush opened the speech by poking fun at his academic transcript and his Yale classmates, several of whom were in attendance.
"They were the ones who invented shock and awe," Bush said, referring to the military slogan of the U.S. invasion of Baghdad. "They're all fine lads. They themselves were C students."
....
David Dougherty and Linnea Perelli-Minetti, juniors at Greenwich High School and members of a grass-roots organization called Youth for Bush, were among those to arrive early. The 17-year-olds and several of their classmates were invited to meet Bush by the local campaign office.
"I was over there in the corner and said, 'Bush, you rock,' and he said, 'No, you rock,' " said Dougherty, who was so excited about shaking the president's hand that he didn't want to wash his own.

Are you a crank ALL the time?? I'm SO sad for you, because you're missing SO much........
Your daughter is VERY perceptive.
He is far more charming in person........but what comes through the strongest, IMO, is how GOOD a man he is.
He radiates the joy of the LORD. It's unmistakeable.
btw, Kantian is a grump, and he's trying to hijack this very upbeat thread.
Don't let him bring you down......even if it IS his mission in life.........
Donation to the BUSH/CHENEY 2004 campaign, in honor of Kantian Burke who is trying to destroy this very fine thread with an off topic gripe session.........
Any one else care to join me??
I think the mother was relating her daughter's experience, your snide reply should have been directed to the mother. As for the content of your remark, if you still belive Clinton achieved a balanced budget, you probably still believe he didn't inhale. Your tagline says it all, "principles, not blind loyalty." We at least have principles.
Used to have a profile up but became tired of others launching personal attacks based on what I had written inside it. Perhaps now the immature and intellectually bankrupt out there will stick with the issues under debate rather than acting like 5 yr olds. I get my news and satiate my need to debate on FR. For my dose of childish namecalling, I'll hang out with the middle school kids down the street thank you very much. Also don't bother sending FRmail. I make it a point to not read them and simply delete whatever comes into my box.If you have something to say, do it out in the open rather than using it as a vehicle to avoid the mods.
Nanna-nanna-nan-Nan!
I still think it courageous for the President to bring it up, since he is the one who will take the hit. By his putting forth his ideas, then guess what? It makes us think about it, create a discussion and come up with alternative suggestions such as this, which as you admit, will still cost us lots of money and more federal bureucracy.
There is no easy solution, and I think President Bush has done more than any President since Reagan, and during some extraodinarily difficult times (not just 9/11, but getting his administration together in a condensed length of time and dealing with a bunch of Clinton leftovers). I think he and his administration deserve a lot of credit.
I know GWB personally and he told me that all these programs are just politics as usual to take away the issues from the dems this election year. He knows they will never get through congress in one piece and will either get hacked to pieces or derailed. Also, during his last term, he will have nothing to loose and can move more to the right. It helps to get elected, ya know.
