SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Hispanics generally approve of President Bush's proposal to create a guest worker program for immigrants now in the country illegally, though support slips once they learn the details, according to a new national poll of the group that would be most affected by the reforms.

Let's see.... they're all for it, until they realize that they actually have to do something to EARN the privelege of being here. I see how this works.

I posted this AP article earlier. Perhaps yours will get more attention.

Hispanics Derived from those from Hispania? Where did that word come from? Maybe it's the new name for the US once it's given over to Mexico?

Bottom line: They are for it but it doesn't go far enough (that is, automatically lead to citizenship) and its requirements are not easy enough for illegal aliens to meet.

I wonder how the polls will go when they figure out it's their own jobs the "guest-workers" will be taking.

Hispanic comes from Spanish-speaking peoples or cultures.

But it's true --- Cesar Chavez and the UFW guys were a little smarter than the current batch I think. They at least had a clue, they knew why illegals from Mexico were being brought in by the truckloads---- and that was to keep them from ever getting a decent paycheck.

Hispanics (to use the term loosely to describe individuals addressed by this article) who have, or are attempting to, gain citizenship through legal means had better take a more in-depth, and longterm look at the issue. If Hispanic illegals can flagrantly disregard the immigration laws, it will not end there. There will be more and more "waves" of illegal immigrants (not all Hispanic) who will also disregard those laws. If legal immigrant Hispanics ever hope to achieve, and maintain, the "American Dream", and a place at the table of political power, they must accept and adhere to the fact that uncontrolled immigration will only spoil exactly what they (presumably) hope to achieve for themselves and their descendants.

There will always be the ones, the wiser and the greedy for power who have no difficulties stepping on the backs of the less fortunate, on tyheir way to the top. That will happen in every movement of people. Mexicans are no different.

Always notice: In any mention of ethnicity, Puerto Ricans will proudly refer to themselves as Puerto Rican. Cubans call themselves Cubans or sometimes Cubanos. Bolivians call themselves Bolivian, and Columbians call themselves Columbian. I dated a girl from Panama, and she called herself Panamanian. (sp)? But Mexicans call themselves Hispanic. They are actually offended by the term "Mexican". It's like a bad word, and I live in NEW MEXICO.
I have learned that "Hispanic" around here means mexican. I actually heard a conversation between two hispanos which went thusly:
"My new neighbors moved in." "Oh, are they hispanic?" "Well, they're Cubans." "Oh."
So even for hispanics, hispanic means mexican unless otherwise specified. Don't know why.
Maybe northern europeans should start calling themselves "Europenic" or maybe "Euranic" or "Caucanos". Then we would have some kind of nomenclature other than the boring, depressing, and nondescriptive "white people".

During the summer barbecues, I tease my neighbor about being Hispanic. Arturo always says, proudly, I'm Mexican. You can't be, you can't swim. The first time his wife heard me say this, she spilled her beer because she was laughing so hard. "I knew your Momma played around when she was young. You are from Spain, aren't you?"
