Former Taliban Governor Arrested By NOOR KHAN ASSOCIATED PRESS
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Pakistani authorities arrested a former Afghan provincial governor and close associate of ousted Taliban leader Mullah Omar in a border town Saturday, a Pakistani official said.
Mullah Abdul Manan Khawajazai was picked up by Pakistani police and intelligence officers in the southwestern border town of Chaman around noon, said Col. Basit, head of Pakistani border security in the area, who uses only one name.
He was being held in custody in an unspecified location for security reasons, Basit said.
Afghan authorities praised the arrest, and Afghan Deputy Interior Minister Hilalludin Hillal said they would seek his extradition.
Khalid Pashtun, spokesman for the governor of the southern Afghan region of Kandahar, said Khawajazai had been a close friend of Omar's during the Taliban regime.
But Pashtun said there was no direct evidence linking Khawajazai, who served as governor of Sar-e-Pol and Badghis provinces, to terrorist attacks since the Taliban were driven from power by U.S.-led forces in late 2001.
Pashtun asked Pakistani authorities to take further action against Taliban suspected of hiding in lawless border areas in Pakistan, including Omar.
The U.S. military in Afghanistan had no information on the arrest, said spokesman Lt. Col. Bryan Hilferty.

Don't tell the dwarves, they insist we have abandoned the taliban to concentrate on their buddy Saddam.

Yeah maybe we need a deck of cards or 10 most wanted to keep track of them? For awhile that one in Iraq seemed problematic, but as they continued to fall it became fun to watch.

What do you think about Pakistan's actions lately?
Not only in terms of terrorist arrests, but the moves they're making in Kashmir and to India generally?

I'm guessing you're right. Pakistan has to fight terrorism just to keep the current boys in power. So far, they're winning.

Terrorist actions - Great, with all these hits recently.
It's all lovey dovey over there. Orbat.com paid a tribute to the effectivenenss of American diplomacy, silently celebrating successes and content to let the media focus on the trendy, or the failures and are quite content to be ignored regarding their successes.
The news sounds great. It's looks good all around. The weakness would be the Musharraf's role as the lynchpin, but, realistically, there's no other credible alternative. Only a military guy could handled the tightwire act that Musharraf has pulled off slowly trying to change the projihadi, pro-proliferation policies of the state.
Even the jihadis are meeting the saffronista LKAdvani, Deputy PM. An atmosphere of goodwill and camarederie seems to have occurred. More Pakistanis are calling for a normal border with India.
Grudgingly, but the Mush gets good marks. With Pakistan's proliferation out in the open and no question about their support for jihadis and a tailwind of close assasination attempts, he can either reach for the Ataturk gold, and merge into a rupee zone with his Afghani and Indian neighbors. Pakistan would like some of the work going on in places like Bangalore.
And then, crouching in the shadows, the evil stench of the jihadis, the ISI and their mullahs and their generals and their footsoldiers, the invisible stench of bloodlust lingering around their persons, mulling over their options to implement Khalifa and to hit the US again.
Do they feel like they're winning or losing. I don't know. But IMO, they have to move soon against the Mush, as it looks like he's finally realized that double games won't cut it anymore. No-one can look the other way. So he has to a the warrior for modernity.
Looks like everythings coming up roses. Hard to argue with a winning strategy.
Unless Mush gets killed.
To: swarthyguy
I think you and I share the same analysis. If Musharraf gets assassinated, all bets are off. It's been close in recent weeks.
I'm a fan of Musharraf. As bad as he may have been in Kargil, the world has changed and so has he.
If he can defuse Kashmir AND conquer and control the frontier territories, he will deserve a medal and much more.

Depends on the extent of jihadi feeling the in army's upper and lower ranks. You could've even serving Corps Commanders opposing each others units; jihadis vs secularists.
The nukes are secure but what if the operational commanders in charge have successfully hidden their jihadi sympathies.
There's a lot of generals and colonels retired by Musharraf for their projihadism. Heck, the head of ISI sent 100K to Atta via OmarSheikh/KSM. The same guy having breakfast in DC with Porter Goss when the planes hit.
In short, Who knows?
