The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has given El Dorado school officials 14 days to craft a plan for sealing many areas of asbestos-tainted soil they overlooked at Oak Ridge High School.

In a letter released Tuesday, the agency directed the El Dorado Union High School District to pave, landscape or otherwise reduce the potential breathing hazard on at least 78 areas of the El Dorado Hills campus.

If they have 6% amphibole asbestos in soil, they have a serious problem. Sometimes regulation is over-the-top, but sometimes, from time to time, the government is actually right.

Quite sure about the cure:

Most(Huh?)  scientists consider amphibole asbestos to be many times more potent than the commercially used "chrysotile" type in causing mesothelioma (mees-o-thee-lee-o-ma), an inoperable and almost always fatal cancer of the membranes lining the chest and other body cavities.

.
.
.

Scientists cannot say how much inhalation of amphibole is harmful. But they know that even brief exposures -- single bursts from, say leaf blowers -- may be followed decades later by malignancy and death. The risk increases with time from onset of exposure, so children are especially vulnerable. KNOW does NOT go with MAYBE!!!

Last week, the EPA disclosed results of laboratory tests it had received to date, stressing that the data had not yet been verified for accuracy. On Tuesday, the agency released the complete data set.

.
.
.

Though still unverified, EPA toxics official Dan Meers said, "We assume (duh!) the data will hold."
.
.
.

Bob Ferguson, district superintendent, said the EPA test results surprise him because soil tests by the district's consultant assured him (duh!) the campus was safe.

.
.
.

Ferguson said conflicting advice (duh!) from various agencies involved has confused officials and the public on the asbestos risk.

If you magnify the individual fibers of amphibole they look like fishhooks; I seriously doubt that amphibole is the dominant fiber represented in the soil generally around there.

They would have to seal the whole county.

Six percent asbestos is soils is an awful lot of asbestos. There is more in some places and less in others. But six percent is a huge amount, compared with the norm.

Just as you wouldn't build a house in a seasonal flood-plain or supermarket over a oil seep, building a school in an area with such a high level of naturally occurring asbestos is not such a great idea. Since that error has been made, it should be corrected by remediation.
