Tancredo for president, group says

Immigration critics in Tennessee want to draft Rep. Tom Tancredo as a protest candidate in the upcoming Republican presidential primary, but don't expect the Littleton lawmaker to become their volunteer.

"A lot of people think my politics are crazy, but I'm not delusional. I don't think I'm going to be president of the United States," Tancredo said Tuesday, in response to a new committee, "Tennesseans for Tancredo," touting a write-in candidacy on the Internet.

Some immigration critics are so upset about President Bush's proposal to offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants that they want to field a protest candidate in Republican presidential primaries in Tennessee and elsewhere.

A Web site, www.tennesseansfortancredo.com, cites the need to "make noise, collect signatures, build a grass-roots movement that attracts citizens from all walks of life and all political parties."

With or without Tancredo's approval, they hope critics of Bush's plan will write in Tancredo during state presidential contests.

Tancredo said he supports Bush on most issues besides immigration and could not see himself having much of an effect on Bush's chances.

This week, the representative launched "Team Tancredo," a political action committee to raise money for candidates who oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.

"Tancredo for President" bumper stickers have been floating around the Internet for more than a year.

"It's a conversation starter," he said. "And the conversation usually starts with, 'Who the hell is Tom Tancredo?' ''

The majority of Americans don't want amnesty for these lawbreakers

That is true and I am one of them however, that does not translate to dumping Bush. The point is that the "base" is gone due to this childish taking my ball and going home attitude. Take the damn ball and go home.

Who said anything about dumping Bush? Disagreeing with his asinine proposal is what this is all about.

No of course their not illegals, are you a racist? Evidently so as that was your first assumption upon looking at the picture. Three illegals showing off their new drivers liscense, that's what you thought, admit it. When in reality they are probably merely showing their id's to the doorman for entrance at Planet Hollywood.

I'm sure there is a sensitivity training class in your neighborhood, you might consider availing yourself of it's benefits.

No, you and the other kiddies are once again threatening to withhold support if he doesn't "shape up". Be a man and just actively oppose his re-election that I can respect. What I can’t respect are empty threats and bluster.

You're wrong. This is about voting for Tancredo in the primary and Bush in November. I's not about taking away support it's about registering opposition to a faulty proposal.

He could very well be impeached over this issue just like Clinton.

If this is true (the EO), this is total abuse of the American people and our country. It is one he!! of alot worse than Clinton.

Tancredo's name is not as unfamiliar as some think. Voting for him in a primary couldn't hurt a thing.

No it is one of the most powerful constitutional powers granted to the Executive. He would be on solid constitutional ground and he may just do it.

On what do you base that assertion?

EOs are enforceable as law unless they are overturned by Congress or the courts.

Because the Constitution's definition of presidential authority is vague, the rules about what can be included in an executive order are unclear. A 1950s Supreme Court decision overturning a Harry Truman executive order offers the sharpest guide to what constitutes a legitimate executive order. The court invalidated the Truman order on the grounds that it attempted to make law. The court further ruled that an executive order is valid only when the president is acting pursuant to an act of Congress or to the Constitution itself. As a result, presidential orders frequently identify the statutes they are relying on.

On what statue would Bush rely?

I think this is going to involve too much of the American taxpayers money for this to be an executive order.
