Pa. Bank Executive Found Stabbed to Death; Authorities Say Money Taken From His Account

PENN HILLS, Pa. Jan. 15 — A missing bank executive was found stabbed to death in a wooded area, and authorities said his killer or killers used his debit card to take money from his bank account.
Daniel Lynch, 56, a vice president for Mellon Financial Corp., had been missing since a weekend trip to Virginia, police said. His body was recovered Wednesday night near a park in Penn Hills, said Ken Fulton, superintendent of the Allegheny County police
Detectives planned to file charges by the end of the week in connection with the death, assistant police superintendent James Morton said. Morton declined to give detail, including whether anyone was in custody yet.
Morton said Lynch died after a chance encounter with one or more persons, and whoever killed him also stole his sport utility vehicle and debit card, obtaining the card's personal identification number.
After Lynch's disappearance, there were unexplained withdrawals from his bank account, police said. Authorities declined to say how much was missing.
His sport utility vehicle was found Tuesday in Charleroi, about 20 miles from where the body was found, police said.
In addition to his bank job, Lynch owned an antiques store in Pittsburgh, and had not been seen since attending an antiques show Sunday outside Washington, D.C., police said. Family and friends raised an alarm when he didn't show up at work or at a doctor's appointment.
Evidence in Lynch's Wilkinsburg home indicates he may have gotten back from Virginia before he disappeared, police said.
