The sheriff's office said its initial investigation appears to indicate that Nathan Roy Hill, of Bunnlevel, wandered into a neighbor's yard and into the reach of a pit bull mixed breed that was chained. Mixed with what breed? Sounds more like a mutt to me.

I agree.

Chained pit bulls in the backyard next door to a 3 yr old is a recipe for disaster.

And pit bulls DON'T growl before they attack

The 3 year old. What mother would let a 3 year old be unsupervised for 2 hours. Back when I did it you had to watch these guys every minute!

I am not sure what this dog is. They said "80-90 lbs". I don't think pits regularly come that big. I thought they are more in the 50 lbs range.
This dog might not even be a pit, or may be some weird mix. The dogs that killed that woman in CA were a really bad mix of pit bull and something a little tougher to control.

They were full blood Presa Canarios. Huge dogs.

So obviously this owner did not properly control his animals. If animal control was called, I would think that either:
1. The animals were mistreated in some way (locked out in the cold or something - this does not make for a good dog)
or
2. They have gotten loose and threatened someone or hurt someone before.

Now am I wrong, or are the a breed created with terrier and some kind of bulldog?
To: ThreeYearLurker
There are no dogs whatsoever in the history of mankind that are worth one child's life. I didn't notice anyone suggesting a trade.

Also from that link is this interesting statistic:
Reproductive Status of Dogs
Overwhelmingly, the dogs involved in fatal dog attacks were unaltered males.
From 2000-2001 there were 41 fatal dog attacks. Of these, 28 were attacks by a single dog and 13 fatalities were caused by multiple dogs.
Of the 28 single dogs responsible for a fatal attack between 2000-2001;
26 were males and 2 were females. Of the 26 males, 21 were found to be intact (the reproductive status of the remaining 5 males dogs could not be determined).

It took 14 posts before someone came on defending the breed (Pit Bull)
Amazing.

Beware of the Dog is posted on her property
She knew the dogs were dangerous. Pit Bulls the majority of the time will revert to their primordial instincts which is to kill. There are exceptions. Unfortunately, this is happening on a daily basis. Too many irresponsible and dishonest individuals are selecting the Pit bull for several reasons; fighting dogs, drug dealer protection etc. This is concentrating the undesirable gene in a polite society. This race/breed of dog is becoming more dangerous because of those that are doing the selective genetics. Gee, I wonder where this analogy could be used elsewhere?

Also from the same link:
While at times informative, statistics on fatal dog attacks can also be misleading. For example, a number of cases were a Pit Bull, Rottweiler or GSD were counted as causing a human fatality were in reality the direct result of gross human negligence or criminal intent (i.e. discarding a newborn in the yard where the dogs were kept, or cases of extremely emaciated animals, or cases were the dog was ordered or encouraged to attack the victim).

Please note that case from California in which Diane Whipple was killed outside her apartment, was not an attack by pit bulls. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Whipple was killed by a kind of Mastiff bred in Mexico not related to the bulldog, pit bull, or staffordship terrier. Getting down to business, I don't think it matters what "breed" we're talking about. Any dog who is chained up all day every day is not going to be a well-trained animal, and a likely danger to small children. Bless the poor kid.

It took 14 posts before someone came on defending the breed (Pit Bull) That aside, any mother who doesn't know where her three-year old is for TWO HOURS is neglectful.
