"The president's lack of engagement left his advisers with ``little more than hunches about what the president might think,'' O'Neill said, according to the programUh huh. And then there are those who get all a-twitter because there is supposedly such heated disagreement in the administration over other issues.
The truths lies somewhere in the middle.

Is Paul O'Neill that fat Yankee who went to San Diego rather than to a Yankee bush league team? I guess not - that was an other O'Neill who was a Yankee outfielder with heart back when they were winners. It ain't this here O'Neill neither. This unseemly one is from McJerksville - can't this guy see that his 15 seconds of fame are over?

...Largely, it seems that he [Paul O'Neill] is most guilty of committing what Robert Reich calls a gaffe: when a Washingtonian accidentally says what he means. And for a man in the lofty position of Treasury Secretarythe man fifth in line for succession and one of the most powerful cabinet membershe was particularly gaffe-prone. Quoth ONeill: I cant believe anyone actually cares about what I do. Then there was his paranoid rant about what the Brazilians do with the loans they get from the IMF (something about keeping the money for themselves in Swiss bank accounts), the trip to sub-Saharan Africa with Bono, the constant spooking of the financial markets, the fight with Sen. Robert Byrd over who grew up poorer, and other such nonsense. And then there was the kicker: The New Republic wrote that Mr. ONeill disagreed with the idea of making the tax cuts permanent. That, and the incessant Democratic clamoring for a shake up in the domestic policy team meant that he was gone less than a month after Election Day. They got what they asked for...
