Bush plan allows American employers to hire Mexican citizens to fill American jobs
President Bush is about to rewrite the rules on illegal immigration by essentially ignoring the rules. Reports out of Washington are that the White House is going to announce a new policy that would allow American jobs to be assigned to illegal immigrants.

As we all know, playing to illegal aliens is all the rage in Washington these days, where politicians of both parties cynically believe that the only way to win votes is by embracing a group of criminals who come to our country, break our laws, and take our jobs.

Time will prove the wisdom of the Bush policy.
The reality is the illegals are here, and have been for years. Many are the guests of Americans like you.
What Bush needs is political cover to nail those illegals to the wall who will not officially reveal their existence and play by the rules.
By giving them a fair chance to provide the best of their presence, the willingness to work at entry-level jobs that Americans shun, and removing the worst, which is their unregistered and illegal status, Bush is once again achieving the heroic and legendary.
Freepers will embrace this policy with time.
I'll be patient in my counter-criticism because I believe emotions and not common sense are guiding the initial reaction.

It's clear that this will lose him more votes than he'll gain.
His motivation is simply to undermine the wages and benefits of the American Middle Class.

"So, if the United States government actually protected our borders and enforced the employment laws that you pay for them to enforce, these jobs in question would pay good enough wages for Americans to fill."
Good article.. and right on the money.. if the will was there to protect our borders it would be done. The will obviously is not there. We were able to topple a regime ..but unable to protect our own borders? .. They have no intention nor the will to protect the citizens..

This law is for unlawful employers. They get amnesty along with the illegal alien.
We are actually giving amnesty to 2 lawbreaking groups (the employer and the employee).

I amazes me that for months all I've heard about from economic doom and gloomers around here is that all the "good" jobs are going overseas. That the only jobs being created are worthless service jobs that no American can make a living from. Now, all of a sudden there are apparently long lines of middle class Americans just waiting for an opportunity to pick strawberries and wash dishes. The illegal immigrants are stealing good jobs right under the noses of our willing, job seeking public.
Give me a break. Either there are no "good" jobs out there (in which case we may as well give them to people who'd rather do them than collect welfare), or there are lots of good jobs available which means our economy and job market is very strong. Which is it?

Three categories of Mexicans are invading the US--those who are looking for jobs, those who are looking to freeload, and those who are criminally inclined. At most only one category is being considered.
What of that part of the 8 to 12 million illegals currently in the US who do not have jobs? Will they return to Mexico voluntarily? And what of those who do not have jobs and are still enteriing the US illegally? What does Dubya have in mind for them?

And in the same line, in these type of threads, one of the main objections is that the "illegals" don't speak English.
How many good jobs are going to go to folks who don't speak English???
Truth is, there ARE jobs that Americans won't do, and for some reason, some folks refuse to admit it!( your example of migrant farm workers picking strawberries in Florida and California and then moving on to where other crops are being harvested is a perfect example).

George Bush probably alienated ten million conservatives today with his asinine proposal. I hope there are enough real Americans in the Senate and in the House to tell him NO.

"How many good jobs are going to go to folks who don't speak English?"
Well, that would depend on your definition of "good job" and your location. In Los Angeles, I'm sure there are many people with good jobs who speak little or no English.
