Letter from Chinese Ambassador to all U.S. House of Representatives Members about Taiwan

Dear Congressman [...]:

I have learnt with deep concern that some Congressional members are currently drafting a resolution to support the Taiwan authorities' attempt to hold a "referendum" and write a "new constitution." This is a highly political issue which deserves close attention.

First of all, let me point out that our compatriots in Taiwan are our brothers and sisters. We fully understand their aspirations for democracy. But the issue surrounding "referendums" and the "new constitution" is not a matter of democracy at all. The real purpose of Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan to hold the so-called "defensive referendum" on March 20, 2004, promulgate a "new constitution" in 2006 and enforce it in 2008 is to use democracy as a cover for his pursuit of "Taiwan independence" and getting re-elected on the same day as the "referendum" next year.

The Taiwan issue is the most sensitive and important political issue in China-U.S. relations. It should be clear that the above-mentioned move by some Congressional members in support of Chen Shui-bian's political agenda runs counter to the relevant commitment of the United States Government. As is known to all, the United States recognizes that there is only one China in the world, the Government of China, and that Taiwan is part of China. This One China policy, which is enshrined in the three China-U.S. joint communiques, has been the consistent policy of the U.S. Government with bipartisan support. President Bush has repeatedly stated that the United States adheres to the One China policy, observes the three China-U.S. joint communiques and opposes Taiwan independence. On December 9, in answering a question on whether he believes that the "referendum" planned by the Taiwan authorities on March 20, 2004, should be canceled, President Bush publicly stated, "The comments and actions made by the leader of Taiwan indicate that he may be willing to make decisions unilaterally that change the status quo, which we oppose."

I wish to further point out that our basic policy on the Taiwan question has always been, namely, "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems." As President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have stated, we in China will do our utmost, with utmost sincerity, to bring about reunification of our country through peaceful means, but we are firmly opposed to any form of separatist activities for "Taiwan independence."

Facts have shown that Chen Shui-bian is a trouble-maker. He cares about nothing but his own political agenda, i.e. "Taiwan independence" and his own re-election. To this day, he still continues with all kinds of provocative actions, which cause instability and tensions across the Taiwan Strait, and hurt the fundamental interests of the Chinese people on both sides of the strait and also those of the American people.

Dear Congressman, we appreciate your support for developing China-U.S. relations, which have indeed achieved significant progress in recent years, as evidenced by, among other things, our common fight against terrorism and our common efforts to solve the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula. So for all the reasons mentioned, I hope you will exercise your vision and prevent the above-mentioned draft resolution from passage in the U.S. Congress.

I am looking forward to seeing you in the near future to discuss with you questions of mutual interest.

DO CHICOM scum feel comfortable telling our country how to act? Apparently so. Nixon's, Bush's and all other US President's conduct regarding China has been deplorable since WW II. When Bush failed to back up Free China recently he was sending the message that the US will not oppose military intervention in Taiwan. Being a weenie on an international scale is never smart.

I suppose it doesn't matter because Bush is a Republican and who cares if the CHICOM's nuke Taipei as long as they manufacture more cheap stuff.

We should be careful with the Chinese. Those guys are good business partners. If we have to give them Taiwan, so be it. It's not worth nuclear war.

What is important is that companies are able to continue do busienss in China.

I'm thinking that Bush is looking at the strategic picture here.

He's gonna need China to be on our side when we start leaning heavy on North Korea.

He's willing to give a little on the Taiwan issue in order for China not to do what they did in Korean War One.

He "The PRC regime" cares about nothing but his own "the Chicom party's" political agenda, i.e. "Taiwan independence" "perpetuation of the 'One China' policy" and his own re-election "retention of power through suppression of dissent". To this day, he "the PRC regime" still continues with all kinds of provocative actions, which cause instability and tensions across the Taiwan Strait, and hurt the fundamental interests of the Chinese people on both sides of the strait and also those of the American people.

As members of the state governments, and per the Constitution which sets dealings/diplomacy/treaties etc. as being outside the realm of the states - fall under President, State Dept (as the Prez' agency for these matters...) - does not this gesture by the stinkin' commie ambassador seem a bit odd and out of order?

Uh, well, let's say that they took over Taiwan, then they wanted to take over the Philippines - you ok with that also? Then, they want Japan, still ok with you? So, on what do you actually have principles that equate to right and wrong?
