President Bush will propose immigration law changes to allow workers from Mexico to enter the United States if they have jobs waiting for them, officials said Monday in previewing an election-year measure intended to bolster support among Hispanic voters.
Advocacy groups were invited to the White House on Wednesday to hear details of the program.
"The president has long talked about the importance of having an immigration policy that matches willing workers with willing employers," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. "It's important for America to be a welcoming society. We are a nation of immigrants, and we're better for it."
Immigration advocacy groups characterized Bush's move as a politically drawn effort to curry favor with Hispanics, a potent political force, particularly in key states like Florida, California and border states. Two sources speaking on condition of anonymity said Bush would outline a set of principles rather than a detailed piece of legislation, and that the policy statement would draw on bills already pending in Congress.
"It looks very much like a political effort and what they do with these `principles' is going to determine whether this is really a policy initiative or not," said Cecilia Munoz, vice president for policy at the National Council of La Raza. "The Latino community knows the difference between political posturing and a real policy debate."
She said the initiative was crafted by Bush's political strategist, Karl Rove, and that the immigration policy community was excluded from the deliberations.
"We know of no one in the immigration policy community, business groups or Latino groups who has been consulted," she said.

That's similar to what states like California have attempted to do, which is try and chase them away. But with the federal government mandating services such as health care and education their hands are tied.

I for one am more than happy to see the truthful, justified anger. People *need* to express themselves freely.
This issue is *way* beyond calm, limp wristed discussion over tea. It's a freaking invasion of our country!
It's a government approved invasion of millions for crying out loud. Why does anyone have to walk on glass over this?
These are criminals and illegal aliens. Do some now have to mask and sugar coat their anger and walk on eggshells over this? What is really going on here??
It seems to me the Republican party knows there is going to be a political earth quake over this, and some are getting a jump on damage control.
Anyone that *isn't* absolutely outraged over this titanic invasion is no conservative, and is obviously putting party before country and is just protecting their beltway party.
This is not what this country is all about.
I've seen what this invasion has done to a people I know personally and regions I've worked in. It's an absolute disgrace!
That's just it -- there are different kinds of illegals --- some don't bring their families which is better because they live well enough on the money sent back but if they come here, it's common for them not to be able to pay all the costs of them here. Those types are informal guest workers and they intend to return home when they can -- which is better. The ones having anchor babies won't go back and they often don't bring with them the skills to make it on their own here.

You're absolutely right. I won't vote for him again either. If he passes this cloaked amnesty he'll be giving the finger to American workers.
Jail employers who hire illegals and there will be no jobs for illegals, and the numbers will drop dramatically. Right now, employers skate with nothing more than a slap on the wrist
This has totally clinched it for me. What a ($#&%*$# disgrace of a Republican this man is. I don't much care any more that he's not a slut like Clinton. He has ballooned domestic spending and torn down our borders worse than Clinton ever did. We have been shafted right, left and center.

I can see it if they do it right. Maybe post a job for Americans first --- loading bales of alfalfa onto trucks or picking chilis --- $5.15 an hour, standard job benefits. If Americans don't want the job --- then open it to foreigners on a guest worker basis--- not just Mexicans --- but Swedes, Canadians, Haitians, Mexicans, Irish, Germans, etc.
But try asking some of the most vocal on this issue about proposing a National ID card!!!!!!, But before you do, Put on some Nomex Jammies before hand :-)
In the long term, the only way this problem of illegals coming here for work will go away forever is when the Mexican economy grows enough that the attraction to come here and work is no longer worth it
Americans first? Right. Illegals are suing in American courts to break American laws.....you'll recall the stories posted on FR about illegals demanding not only entrance to college but in-state tuition as well.
Imagine who will show up at Home Depot when the "Americans first" job announcements go up on the employment board.

What happens to those who decide our government moves too slowly --- takes too long to process papers and just comes over the old-fashioned way -- on their own --- illegally --- and finds a job on their own? Would we have several sets of immigrants now? Legals, Guest worker legals, and the usual illegal?
