You are so right. I went to a dentist in my network some time back. The office looked perfectly clean and appropriate, but as I am sitting in the chair I noticed a "red chunk" of something in the spit bowl. I tried to convince myself that I should not be hyper-critical, but my stomach rolled every time I thought of it, and I never went back there.

I think we do need to take responsibility for choosing doctors and dentists carefully. The problem is that there's no one who rates them. Perhaps we need a clearinghouse for the number of lawsuits they have, or something similar.

BTW, our dental plan at work is one to watch out for. The way it works is that each participating dentist gets X number of dollars per month whether he works on anyone or not. This is an incentive NOT to work on patients. And it seems the ones who do work on them do not do a very good job.
