I don't think it is fair to characterize the dispute as "they fought over money" if he was taking money out of their joint account and sending it to his sister and borrowing against credit cards when he didn't have a job. I would say he was putting the family into deep debt.

If they don't have kids or money to fight over, they'll fight over the TV, or stereo. If they are really poor and don't have much of anything, they'll fight over the pots and pans.
