President Bush plans to kick off his reelection year by proposing a program that would make it easier for immigrants to work legally in the United States, in what would constitute the most significant changes to immigration law in 18 years, Republican officials said yesterday. Lobbyists working with the White House said Bush is developing a plan that would allow immigrants to cross the border legally if jobs are waiting for them. The sources said the administration also wants to provide a way for some undocumented workers in the United States to move toward legal status. Bush will try to make the plan more palatable to conservatives by including stricter entry controls, including increased use of technology at the border and steps toward better enforcement of current visa restrictions and reporting requirements, sources said.

So it appears from this article the President's border policy is driven, in some measure, by the desire for votes from the Hispanic community. But this policy does seem to have some good measures to it.

Cheap domestic labor seems to be the driver here. the producers that want larger profits will win out over the economic interests of US workers.
Can't have more expensive fruits/veggies or lawn care, now can we?

I kinda like the "BACKGROUND check idea..."

The proposal planned by the White House has much in common with plans that have been offered by some of the Democratic presidential candidates, most of which provide for a route to legalization for undocumented workers who have been in the country for five or six years, have a work history and can pass a background check.

The problem I have with articles like this is that nobody is directly quoted, we are not talking about some secret operation here, we are talking about an immigration policy. For three years we have heard from liberal rags like this one and the NYT's that Bush was gonna grant amnesty to millions of illegals and it's never happened. I truly believe that these liberal rags trot these stories out in an effort to divide the right. Until I see some quotes from somebody other than "Unnamed Source" or "Senior Official" I will continue to refuse to fall for the bait

Here is a good point for "undocumentedness."

Though writer Mark A. Dwyer argues against the idea he may have stumbled upon what the self-first politicians are up to by asking what if we called college dropouts "undocumented graduates?"

(Originally published in the December 21, 2003 issue of the Alamance Independent, "UNDOCUMENTED GRADUATES")

I argue that here is post-modern, amoral "politics of me" thinking of our current crop of politicians at its best. "Undocumentedness" benefits us to no end. Here is the solution to education, health, technical, poverty -- everything -- problems! "Undocumented education!" "Undocumented experience!" "Undocumented bank withdraws!"

The undocumented have full rights and privileges. The precedence is well established and is about to become the law of the land.

Big bonus: The end of the "era of big government!" Who needs 'em? No need for education facilities, law enforcement. . . .

The United States doesn't belong to the whole world. Everybody who wants to immigrate here doesn't have a right to do so.

The United States CERTAINLY doesn't belong to Karl Rove - or Bush II for that matter. It belongs to US, the American People, and the American People have made it pretty clear they are FED UP with the huge wave of Hispanic Immigrants who are threatening to change America into another Latin American Country. I, forone, AM d#mn tired of seeing Spanish - English signs, instructions, labels, etc. At the turn of the century when America was flooded by southern and easern European immigrnat, NOTHING like this EVER occurred. The newcomers were expected to Americanize themselves, and THEY DID.

It shouldn't even be necessary to SAY this, but in the era of political correctness, I must. I don't hate Hispanics. Most of them are hard-working decent people who offer a lot to this Country. They have a rich culture which makes and has made a great addition to American Culture as a whole. But I don't want to be living in a bilingual nation, nor do I want to live in a COuntry dominated by any one particular Ethnic group. I'd feel the same way if an army of Poles, Lithuanians, Italians, Norweigans. or Englishmen crossed our borders illegally every night.

America is supposed to be a mix of ethnicities and cultures - it always has been.

Karl Rove, that evil demon, should be removed from office. Conservatives should DEMAND it as a pre-condition to supporting Bush II in the next election. Rove is a Republican counterpart to Carville - a man totally devoid of any moral compass other than one which directs him, incorrectly in this case, to secure a big win for his boss in 2004, even if the results are BAD for America.

Legalizing millions of illegal Hispanics in America will NOT secure their allegance to Bush II. Nor will it secure the votes of the majority of Hispanic citizens living here, whose concerns are essentially the same as other Americans, and, for the most part, as survey after survey has indicated, does NOT include assisting millions of other Hispaincs to immigrate here.

One of the primary functions of a government - ANY government - is to secure its borders against illegal invaders. In this respect, Bush II has failed miserably. Thanks to liberal advisors like Ridge and Rove, our borders will continue to be violated as their is no incentive for ANYONE wanting to come here, not to do so.

If our borders were tighter, 9-1-1 would NOT have occurred. But, thanks to melon-heads like Rove and Ridge, this simple analysis has aparently been discarded.

Tancredo from Colorado should run against Bush II in a primary. Perhaps it will humble "W" and make him see the light on this issue.

His primary responsiblity is to US, not to illegal aliens, to Senior Fox, or to corporate interests eager to exploit cheap foreign labor.

Rove and Ridge - HASTA LA VISTA!!! VAYAN CON DIABLO!!!!

Why this would surprise anybody, is a total mystery to me.

If you didn't see this massive, historical, "Bring in the Vote - Bring in the Mexican" amnesty coming, don't go out alone after dark.

Q: Why does the United States Government permit wholesale illegal Mexican immigration?

A: For the workers.

Q: Why does the United States Government need foreign workers (not just Mexicans)?

A: It does not have enough labor force to meet the service sector and other blue collar work sector demands and growth within it's economy.

Q: Why does the United States Government not have enough workers to meet economic demand?

A: Over TWENTY MILLION AMERICAN WORKERS HAVE BEEN ABORTED OVER THE PAST TWENTY YEARS.

Q: If over twenty million American workers have been aborted over the past twenty years, who is going to pay for (read: generate taxes) the Social Security of the baby-boomer generation (now reaching critical mass)?

A: Mexican workers.

Any questions?

So it appears from this article the President's border policy is driven, in some measure, by the desire for votes from the Hispanic community. >>>>>>>

So is it *our* presidents job to enforce all US Laws, or just the ones he wants to. ??

Why should US laws be changed (or NOT enforced) to *appease* Vincente Fox & Co., or the US 'hispanic community'.

But this policy does seem to have some good measures to it.>>>>>>>>

Rewarding lawbreakers is a 'good measure' ?? All the 'rewards' (amnesties) we have offered since 1986, have only resulted in MILLIONS more breaking into the USA for their reward.

You know you may be a troll or not, but your post is the truth.

Some collectivist enablers around here have a "beaten wife" mentality.
