Today is Friday, Dec. 19, the 353rd day of 2003. There are 12 days left in the year. The Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah, begins at sunset.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Dec. 19, 1843, "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens, was first published in England.

On this date:

In 1732, Benjamin Franklin began publishing "Poor Richard's Almanac."

In 1776, Thomas Paine published his first "American Crisis" essay.

In 1777, Gen. George Washington led his army of about 11,000 men to Valley Forge, Pa., to camp for the winter.

In 1907, 239 workers died in a coal mine explosion in Jacobs Creek, Pa.

In 1932, the British Broadcasting Corporation began transmitting overseas with its Empire Service to Australia.

In 1957, Meredith Willson's musical play "The Music Man" opened on Broadway.

In 1974, Nelson A. Rockefeller was sworn in as the 41st vice president of the United States.

In 1978, jury selection began in Salem, Ore., in the case of John J. Rideout, accused of raping his wife, Greta. (Rideout was acquitted; the couple divorced after the trial.)

Ten years ago: Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and senior PLO officials ended two days of closed-door talks in Oslo, Norway, in which they sought to break a deadlock over Palestinian self-rule in the occupied territories.

Five years ago: President Clinton (news - web sites) was impeached by the Republican-controlled House for perjury and obstruction of justice (he was later acquitted by the Senate). Two days after his confession of marital infidelity, Bob Livingston told the House he wouldn't serve as its next speaker. President Clinton halted airstrikes against Iraq (news - web sites) after a fourth day of attacks.

One year ago: Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) declared Iraq in "material breach" of a U.N. disarmament resolution. After a prosecutor cited new DNA evidence, a judge in New York threw out the convictions of five young men in a 1989 attack on a Central Park jogger who had been raped and left for dead. Two days after his confession of marital infidelity, Bob Livingston told the House he wouldn't serve as its next speaker.

Leave it to AP to point out Livingston's immorality without mentioning the fact that the President was guilty of the exact same behavior. Clinton was the second President to be impeached. Ever. Is this next sentence even appropriate?

Of course. They can't be totally honest. There has to be a right wing bash in there somewhere.

I seldom attend church. I told my wife before the impeachment vote, that if Bill was impeached, I would go to church with her the next Sunday. I am glad to say I attended church.

I still have my copy of the Wisconsin State Journal from that date. How hard it must have been for them to print that headline.

I prefer "Happy Impeachment Day" to "Happy Holidays."

So do I! In fact, I wished certain people a "Happy Impeachment Day" this morning. And five years ago, just about everyone who knew me was laughing at how I got my birthday present a few days early! :)

Thank you- those five years passed have seen so many changes- I wasn't even on the Web then, talk radio was my source of info, and the computer ran DOS 6.22--

...but we nearly got the SOB, and impeachment will stain his "legacy" just as he stained America for eight sorry years at the helm.
