Prosecutor: 'Dirty bomb' offered in missile plot

NEWARK -- A man already accused of supporting terrorists in a missile smuggling plot was indicted yesterday on charges that he also offered to deliver a "dirty bomb."

In addition to shoulder-fired missiles, Hemant S. Lakhani also said he could get anti-aircraft guns, tanks, armored personnel carriers, radar systems and a "dirty bomb," U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said.

TIRASPOL, Moldova -- In the ethnic conflicts that surrounded the collapse of the Soviet Union, fighters in several countries seized upon an unlikely new weapon: a small, thin rocket known as the Alazan. Originally built for weather experiments, the Alazan was transformed into a terror weapon, packed with explosives and lobbed into cities. Military records show that at least 38 Alazan warheads were modified to carry radioactive material, effectively creating the world's first surface-to-surface dirty bomb.

The warheads are not known to have been used. But now, according to experts and officials, they have disappeared.

Is it just me? Shouldn't this be MAJOR NEWS? I saw this mentioned on FOX NEWS a day or so ago and it was reported much like a minor traffic stop would be. Car chases receive major coverage. The arrest of a major arms dealer who tried to deliever a dirty nuke gets virtually none.
