Sacramento -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno will launch separate efforts to rewrite state campaign finance laws next year, with Leno proposing restrictions on millionaire candidates and the governor pushing to ban fund-raising for several months every year. On Tuesday, Leno announced he would sponsor campaign finance reform legislation that includes provisions that would have affected Schwarzenegger's recall run this fall. An aide to the governor said Schwarzenegger would announce legislation in January to prohibit fund-raising during state budget negotiations. Both Leno and Schwarzenegger hope to seize on widespread public unhappiness with the perceived influence campaign contributions have on policy decisions in Sacramento.

RADICAL CONCEPT ALERT!!!

I think it was George Will earlier this year who made the point that if the federal government wasn't so big and had their fingers in so many pies this (campaign financing) wouldn't be a problem.

I always thought that anyone should be able to give however much money they want to whatever politican they. With one small provision...it must be reported.

if the federal government wasn't so big

Or let's say if the federal government respected the Constitution and individual rights. It isn't really a question of size, it's a question of respecting rights. If the government is not allowed to sell favors to one person at the expense of another ... well then there won't be anyone buying favors.

1. Or let's say if the federal government respected the Constitution and individual rights.
2. It isn't really a question of size, it's a question of respecting rights.

If we had #1 then #2 would't really be a problem.

As we have (ruefully) learned from McCain-Feingold, CFR is NOT about controlling campaign donations, it is about controlling the population at large and denying us our Constitutional rights.

Let me pose a question: Do we REALLY, honestly believe that politicians are honest enough to admit that they are being corrupted by campaign contributions? Really?

If this issue isn't on the radar screens of the voters, why is it so important to the politicians? What makes us think that the politicians really want to regulate themselves and the way that they acquire campaign money? And, in CA in particular, why is this issue suddenly cropping up in a state that has much bigger fish to fry?

Anyone who doesn't see a problem here is asleep. CFR is starting to sweep the country as though it were an entirely new category of tax revenues that suddenly became available. The good folk in CA need to pay close attention to this one and see what the pols are trying to sneak through on them. I can't help but believe that there are some even rougher waters ahead for CA and every other state in the Union if this is not nipped in the bud. CFR is looming as the very essence of "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me". McCain-Feingold fooled us once, we don't need to be fooled again.
