What's the point? Strom was a honky?
I don't get it.

Bill Clinton is cringing right now.

I wonder if, after he is passed on, the press will ever refer to Robert KKK Byrd as "once a leading segregationist."

U.S. senator James Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.), once the nation's leading segregationist.Isn't this a bit of an overstatement?
(Segregation is wrong. I am totally against it. I am not defending Thurmond's ancient view, but I am not aware he was ever defined as "the nation's leading segregationist". I can't wait for the next WaPo article that refers to Robert Byrd. I'm sure they'll remind us of his former activities. Or maybe they'll decide "he changed" and deem it not worthy of mentioning at this late date...)

Very interesting. This has been going on since the foundation of the nation...white men finding prestige with their wives, and true love with their mistresses.

Please do not post this under "breaking news". This has been known in SC for decades.

This woman is 78. She would have been born in 1924. Back them it would have been almost impossible for a white man to recognize a black child without putting everyone in danger.
It sounds like he provided money for her at least since 1941.
This would make an interesting story. Armstrong Williams suggested that many knew about this arrangement in Thurmond's staff. It sounds like no one was ever explicitly told the connection, but Thurmond was said to have held her in high regard.
I hope she gets the recognition she deserves and tells her story.
Today's social norms are very different than 1924. Bill Clinton is said to have fathered a black child by a prostitute. If the story is true, I bet he is not supporting the child. At least Thurmond was attempting to fulfill his financial obligations to his child.
