Today, Tuesday February 3rd, 2004, should have been your 32nd birthday, Chris (or "TrappedInLiberalHell", as you were fondly known here on your favourite internet forum.) The tears fall freely, but adequate words will not express my pain, so I'm going to have to borrow the lyrics from a song which seems to sum it up, at least in some small way.

Baby do you know what you did today
Baby do you know what you took away
You took the blue out of the sky
My whole life changed when you said goodbye
And I keep crying, crying

Ooooooh baby
Oooooooooooh baby
I wish I never saw the sunshine
I wish I never saw the sunshine
And if I never saw the sunshine, baby
then maybe I wouldn't mind the rain

Every day is just like the day before
All alone a million miles from shore
All of my dreams, I dreamed with you
And now they will die, and never come true
And I keep crying, crying

Ooooooh baby
Oooooooooooh baby
I wish I never saw the sunshine
I wish I never saw the sunshine
And if I never saw the sunshine, baby
then maybe I wouldn't mind the rain
All this pain

And I know there would not be
This cloud that's over me
Everywhere I go

Ooooooh baby
Oooooooooooh baby
I wish I never saw the sunshine
I wish I never saw the sunshine
And if I never saw the sunshine, baby
then maybe I wouldn't mind the rain

All this pain
I wouldn't mind the rain
It wouldn't be this pain
I wouldn't mind the rain
I wouldn't mind the rain...

- Beth Orton, "I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine"

May God bless you KangarooJacqui. I've read this whole thread through: I remember wishing he had hung on until the Schwarzenegger win in CA.

I always manage to foul up when I want to write something like this but here goes: I know that Chris is in a better place and his pain is gone.

Oops, I meant the capture of Saddam, not the CA guv race. See I knew I'd foul it up. :(

*tears welling up as I write*...

You know, I thought the same thing. You know when you get incredible joy coupled with unspeakable agony? That's how I felt when Saddam was captured. The joy because "WE GOT HIM!" The sadness, of course, because Chris never got to see it...and the two of us weren't able to share the joy, the high-fives and so on.

Reading this thread on FR and also in tears.

I did not know him, but I feel like I lost a family member.
God bless him, his family and friends.

for Trapped and those left behind (From "The Prophet")

Than Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."

And he said:

You would know the secret of death.

But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?

The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;

And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.

Is the sheered not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?

Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink form the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Thank you, Judy, cyborg and Laz (hugs) - true FRiends all.

In fact, thankyou to all who have posted with kindness on this thread or who have FReepmailed me over the past couple of months.

I hope that wherever his spirit flies now, Chris knows how much he is missed, by his friends, his family, and his fellow FReepers.

More sad news for Chris's family, with his father passing away last week in California.

My thoughts are with Chris's older sister (also in California), who has now lost all her immediate family. (Chris and his sister's mother died eleven years ago).

Rest in peace, Clifford Van Loon - and my dear Christopher.

Wow, I hope there are people around that sister to hold her, that is an awful couple of losses to take in less than a year.

May God bless her and give her the strength to LIVE the life all her family would have wanted her to.

I'm so sorry for these losses.
A huge hug from me to her, be strong.

This thread was linked to another one regarding suicide. While I didn’t freepmail with Chris, I did love his screen name and wittiness. I know it was a long time ago, but time is slow in dimming the pain.
