Snow Day for L.A. Schoolchildren
Los Angeles Times ^ | December 9, 2003 | Jessica Garrison, Times Staff Writer

"In many American cities, local politicians spend the winter months helping clear away snow. But Southern California is different. Here, elected officials, sometimes using taxpayer money, bring the white stuff in.

Man-made snow has already come to Pacoima, Long Beach, downtown Los Angeles and many places in between this year. (A version of the stuff — hail — fell for free in Watts last month, but cost a bundle to clean up.) And in the coming weeks, it is scheduled for several other locales, including a patch in Exposition Park where a representative from Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn's office is expected to frolic today.

"We want to bring winter to the people," said Vincent Torres, recreation director for Paramount, where officials will spend about $10,000 to bring in 100 tons of snow Saturday..."

This is, after all, education, Los Angeles style.

Forget about California's budgetary worries, it's time to "frolic today" with "a representative from Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn's office" "in Exposition Park."

When you can't get to the mountain, why of course, bring the mountain to the City, using OPM, Other People's Money.

Wheeee! Don't forget your mittens. /Seething sarcasm reduced to a low boil.

I hereby volunteer to help "bring winter to the people" of California by offering to swap my home in northeast Ohio (for the winter) with someone in California who owns beachfront property.

Instead of spending your evenings in your hot tub watching the sun go down over the Pacific, you could be sitting on my back deck watching the sleet turn to stinging ice before your very eyes! Come experience firsthand the glories of scraping snow off your car in the early morning darkness!

LOL!

There's not even snow in the mountains of Southern California. We're going up to our place up there, and there is no snow on the ground, and that's at 6800 feet, and it's December. LOL!

Shhhhhhhhhhhh, Joe, don't tell anyone else. They're feeling pretty cold right now and some might have a few jitters from the quake they had today. The last thing California needs is more folks moving out here.

Meanwhile, how's your kid doing? The shelves are bare at Ralph's and it's looking pretty dismal for Christmas.

**$10,000**

And what will Governor Schwarzenegger say about this ridiculous extravagance?

Total waste!

Never fear,

I warned um on another post, Here's what I wrote.

Just wait until tomorrow.

You may experience a strange phenomena. Sometime an earthquake can have a delayed recoil effect, within 24 hours later, epic massive earthquake swarms can occur, causing liquefaction to a wide region.

This causes the ground to turn to an "oatmeal" like substance and homes can sink and tall building just "bob" around in it, like a buoy in a lake, sometimes sinking completely.

If the swarms are strong enough, it can change the course of rivers and cause ground water in wells to shoot straight out of the ground, at the same time rivers can flood over their banks. This effect will generally burst all water pipes within hundreds of miles.

I'm not saying this will happen, but you never know.

I watched my neighbors home get completely swallowed up by the liquefaction. It was as if it was swallowed by oatmeal.

What was weird, 20 minutes later it came back up to the surface.

I figured that would hold um off.
