If that was the case the SEC would walk away wqith it every year.

But, it would require that every conference hold a championship game

Not neccesarily... legitimate conference champions are crowned without a championship game in the Big 10, WAC, Pac-10, and Big East. Only the SEC and Big 12 have championship games, and that's because the conferences have grown so large that you dont play every conference team every year.

Hehehe- The SEC is the strongest division in football, but they rarely get a national championship cause they beat themselves up playing for their own conference championship...

GO LSU!

Nope, in my system we have K-State, Michigan, LSU, USC, Miami(? who the heck cares about the Big Least), and FSU as conf. champs. 1-loss Oklahoma and 2-loss Ohio State, Texas, and Tennessee probably as wildcards. 3-loss Georgia, Iowa, Purdue, Washington State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Maryland, an 1-loss TCU, Miami of Ohio, and Boise State all knowing that if they had one more win they would have had a good chance of making the playoffs.

You really think in that system Maryland wouldn't be absolutely kicking themselves for their September loss to N. Ill? It only ended up costing a playoff spot, and a chance at a BCS bowl(assuming my 10 team playoff scenario had been in place.)

Sorry, but that argument that a 8-12 team playoff makes the regular season meaningless completely collapses under scrutiny(the way the OU offense collapsed tonight...)

We do agree on one point. The Sooners got their collective butt whipped tonight. However, like it or not, they will play for the national championship and they will win. Actually, I pity the opponent who has to meet them after such a humiliating defeat. Can you say OU, 2003 National Champions?.... It is a stretch tonight but tomorrow is a new day..... GO SOONERS..

Yeah, they knock down each others rankings so often that it's impossible for them to flood the BCS as would be the case in a playoff system.

winner of the Sugar Bowl is THE national champion....there are no other scenarios

How about the sugar bowl winner, eeks out a win while USC beats michigan by 50. USC might be the winner especially since USC will probably be #1 in both human polls on Sunday.

Perhaps it will end up 'OU, 2003 MYTHICAL national champs'. Perhaps. But if USC beats a great Michigan team in the Rose, the coaches may very well vote for USC, and almost zero fans outside of Oklahoma will view OU as champs. Just like that bogus joke of a phony title given to Colorado over G. Tech the year Colorado 'beat' Missouri on a 5th down, to 'officially' have one loss AND a tie. But everyone outside of CO knew that they had lost 2 games and tied another.

Good arguements!

(Best I've ever heard AGAINST a playoff systems.....)

But you forget a few things, important in football, not critical in EVERY other college sport/national/professional sport.

College football involves and twists the whole campus - Yes, it's not politcally corrupt to remember that, and not every college is as warped as the A&M, or the other top 25 teams, but it really warps the campus at the top colleges.

Fine - for a known season of only 10-11 games. Have fun, have parties, travel, bring a 200-person band, cheer squad, 100-150 traveling with the team, and get 30,000 - 60,000 to the game.

But again, and again, and again for a 16, 8, or even 4 team playoff?

Not reasonable. Not gonna happen. Don't need it.

Shouldn't happen anyway.

Let the proponents argue.

Heck, most seasons (8 out of 10, 18 out of 20) there IS no reason for a payoff = the winner is clear. The two or three seasons out of 20 that a clear arguement exist don't justify a playoff system.

And for those three, let them argue!

If there were a "playoff" - let it happen as one game AFTER the Dec 31 - Jan 1 games. By that day, every team BUT 2 are eliminated.

"Oklahoma not a fraud, a great team that will win the national championship."

Oklahoma gave up 4 TD's and 227 yards passing to a QB who will be an undrafted free agent, and you can make that stament, sober, unstoned, without using Rush's medicine cabinet, and with a straight face? What the hell is in the water you drink? I want some!!!!!!

I'm a Longhorn, too, but geez, I wanted UT to be in the Rose Bowl. Now, it looks like there's no shot. I'm all ears for a good playoff system proposal

Just imagine what a team like Michigan would do to Oklahoma's defense. Michigan has 3 legitimate NFL-caliber receivers, an NFL-caliber running back, and quite possibly a NFL-caliber quarterback. Oklahoma was overrated. They played absolutely nobody all season. Texas, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska are all jokes. Kansas State lost to Marshall, a MAC school which finished 3rd or lower (I'm not sure). Death to the BCS!

ummm..the winner of the Sugar Bowl is THE national champion....there are no other scenarios......eg the winner of the Rose Bowl.

The coaches poll is contractually obligated to vote for the Sugar Bowl winner as the national champion. However, the AP poll is not obligated and could conceivably have USC (from the Rose Bowl) as the national champion after the bowl games are done.

Wow! That takes some grawls for a Longhorn to post those comments. I thought it was only the DU types who would be upset by such a dominant (77-0) performance.

Looks like OU vs LSU in the Sugar Bowl. At least USC can win the "official" (AP) championship with a win in the Rose Bowl.

Not looking good for USC. Boise St. leads Hawaii 24-14 near end of first half.

I think the best argument that can be made for a playoff was made by Kansas State tonight. Here is a team that suffers injuries to two of its top players (Sproles, Roberson) early in the season. Loses a game to Marshall while playing with inexperienced backup QBs. Loses two close, early conference games before putting it all together.

Fast-forward to the end of the season, where K-State rides a 6-game win streak into the Big 12 championship game. The Wildcats dominate a team that many had said might be the best ever in the sport to win the conference championship. And despite being conference champions they have absolutely no shot of being remotely considered for a national championship.

The conference championship should mean something, dammit!

Just imagine what a team like Michigan would do to Oklahoma's defense.

I imagine that Michigan would do just about the same that another team with all of those characteristics did to OU's defense (Texas). Which is next to nothing. Michigan 's offense is exactly the type of offense that OU's defense dominates. If you want to talk about overrated teams, the conversation should start with Michigan.

You sound just like me at this time last year. Let me warn you, though. The rest of them think that all these neutral site games will be jam-packed and that somehow the TV money will enrich the conferences to a far greater degree than the current system. I don't see how a conference like the Big 12 (8 bowl teams this year) gets more money from a playoff than the current system.
