They are the primary reason moderates have trouble voting Republican.

It was the social conservatives who are the only ones putting up a fight against government expansion. You can't get any more socially conservative than Dick Armey or Ron Paul.

If a politician says he or she is "fiscally conservative but socially liberal" you can almost bet the farm he or she is lying about the fiscally conservative part. Consider Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, Christie Todd Whitman, Susan Collins etc
