New York Times Seen In Lackluster Ad Trend Forbes Staff , 11.24.03, 12:03 PM ET

NEW YORK -

New York Times (nyse: NYT - news - people ) stock softened after a Banc of America Securities research note said the media company and rival Knight Ridder (nyse: KRI - news - people ) finished October on a lackluster note, posting respective ad sales growth gains of just 1.2% and 0.4%.

Bank of America Securities said the color ad page count at the flagship newspaper of Dow Jones (nyse: DJ - news - people ), The Wall Street Journal, is averaging 8.3 pages per day so far this November, which is up from the November 2002 level of 6.8 pages per day. But the securities firm said that earnings risks persist for the newspaper sector overall in the fourth quarter due to weak ad sales.

It noted that although telecoms now offer wireless portability, there have been very few ads for the new service in newspapers. In addition, department stores' ad spending remains soft and is continuing to shift to other forms of media.

Despite its concerns about Knight Ridder's weak ad spending in October, Banc of America Securities reiterated a "buy" rating for it and Tribune (nyse: TRB - news - people ) while maintaining "neutral" ratings on New York Times and Dow Jones. New York Times was down 48 cents at $45.36; Dow Jones, down 1 cent at $49.92; Tribune, up 7 cents at $48.10; and Knight Ridder, up 47 cents at $73.23

Apparently the NY Slimes is not prospering from the GW Bush economic recovery.

The good news for our side just continues flow out and down all over the rats.

Answer to the Media

Reader tomj writes in a comment below:
i figure i have one way certain to respond to the bias of the aforementioned liberal liars. i have cancelled my subscripions and get my news articles free via polipundit and realclearpolitics....
Many more people than you may realize are reacting similarly.

In fact the New York Times lost 5.3 percent of its readership in the last six-month survey, the largest loss among the top newspapers. The LA Times, Chicago Tribune and Washington Post all lost readers. Meanwhile the New York Post's readership jumped 10 percent. The Wall Street Journal and USA Today also gained readers. After the LA Times' carefully-scheduled last-minute hit piece on Arnold Schwarzenegger, it lost at least 10,000 subscribers according to its managing editor.

Fox News is soaring and has more viewers than all the other cable news networks combined. And Fox News' ratings are already comparable to the broadcast network newscasts, which are in ratings freefall. And keep in mind that Fox News is on 24 hours; so it has many more viewers who tune in for a specific program every day. In fact, 22 percent of Americans already cite Fox News as their primary news source and it wouldn't surprise me if Fox News ratings were to surpass network newscasts in a few years.

Conservatives today dominate the Internet, with sites like TownHall.com and right-leaning blogs like InstaPundit.com getting far more clicks than their liberal competitors.

Slowly but surely we're tearing down the left's Orwellian propaganda machine.

Thanks for more good news in your reply:

Oh Tsk Tsk Maybe they should ask A.N.S.W.E.R to come to their rescue. They seem to like posting their ads in their paper.

My poor old heart just can't handle all of this bad news.

First the markets do great today and now this terrible news re ads being down at the Ny Slimes.

Finnman has a reply on this thread showing that the NY Slimes subscriptions are dropping too.

The way to beat the liberals is, in part, to cut off their propaganda machine... the liberal media.

We must ALL withdraw from the liberal media if we, as conservatives, are to defeat it and them.

What's the price for a full page ad, and how much does it cost the WSJ to print it? If the price per ad went down 15% their profits would be about the same.

So if it wasn't for George $oreA$$ and the Opecker Princes and Thugs paying for ads for A.N.S.W.E.R., their ad $'s would even be lower.

It kinda reminds one of the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.

The iceberg that the NY Slimes hit was 9/11 and President Bush's response to Islamofascist terrorism.

The Slimes inspite of the mass murder of 3,000 Americans on American soil continues be on the side of the terrorists and their buddy Uncle $oddomite.

That will fly with the lunatic lefties. However, it will not fly with conservatives and many moderates.

I hope that we see this replicated every month/quarter as the Slimes sinks into the quagmire it has fabricated for itself.

I want to see them bought out by a conservative who retains the name and turns it into a conservative newspaper.

That would be hell on earth for its owners and the anti Americans who worship every lie printed in the NY Slimes.

The only reference point I have for newspaper ad rates was due to a scam here in Seattle: a company sent a rush job to the Seattle Times late Friday for a full page ad on Sunday. Turns out their ad was a scam to get people to call them with their credit card numbers, and the check for the $40k to place the ad bounced.

The paper has a readership of around 500k. With the ad being placed at the last minute the price might of been jacked up a lot.

Calculate how much money you would have if you took all the subscription costs to the NYT and put it into Microsoft stock.

Even with the Clinton/Reno attack on Bill Gates/MSFT in March 2000.

You will be astounded.

Some will allege I am playing the Blaine Game now.

That is an excellent point.

I would like to see all Freepers stop the subscription to the SLIMES or any left wing fish rap and send the monthly savings each month to Free Republic.

One can only imagine the impact of that monthly investment in Free Republic.
