WASHINGTON (AP) - The congressional year ends with the future of President Bush's vaunted energy bill uncertain and no decision on how to fix the nation's crumbling highways or avoid a looming trade war with Europe. With Republicans in control of the White House and both houses of Congress, it wasn't supposed to be this hard.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist says he was deeply disappointed not to produce an energy bill but thrilled to have provided the nation's seniors with prescription drug coverage.

Looks like we'll have to wait next year to see how much further the government, controlled by baby boomers and the gimme generation, will put generation X and generation Y into debt.

There was no action on a minimum wage increase, mental health parity, hate crimes legislation, an unemployment insurance benefits extension or a larger child tax credit for some 6 million lower-income families who missed out on the increase in the tax cut package. Thank God for small favors. I especially love tax credits for those who choose irresponsibility as a lifestyle. I swear, if I was a lawyer I would take the EIC (and other rewards for bad life decisions) to court as an "illegal taking." IMHO this is very different than other types of tax misuse and very much on point.

In every state there is a lot of road work going on. I wondered out loud to my partner why this would be so because, as well as I can remember, road work always happened under a Dim administration.
My partner said it was Fed money let loose to those states that had allowed the BAC to be lowered to .08.
I don't know if all of those states voted the reduction in the BAC, but I see a lot of construction going on ... road and bridge.
