Commission finds no wrongdoing in Rich's donations to Clinton campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Election officials have dismissed a complaint accusing Democratic fund-raiser Denise Rich of donating campaign money and furniture to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in exchange for President Clinton's pardon of Rich's ex-husband.

The Federal Election Commission made the decision last month and disclosed it Wednesday.

The government watchdog group Judicial Watch accused Denise Rich of making excessive donations to Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2000 campaign totaling at least $70,000 and of giving her furniture worth $7,375 in return for the president's pardon of Marc Rich, who lives in Switzerland.

Under the campaign law then in effect, individual donors could donate only $1,000 per candidate for a particular election.

Commission lawyers said it appeared Denise Rich's contributions were legal. They included $2,000 to her campaign - $1,000 for the primary and $1,000 for the general election - and $70,000 to the New York Senate 2000's soft money account, which wasn't subject to the law's donation limits.

The complaint gave no evidence that the furniture, including two coffee tables and two chairs, that Rich gave to the Clintons were used in connection with Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate campaign, FEC attorneys found.

The commission lawyers said the allegations that the Clintons, Rich and others were involved in exchanging money or political support for pardons amounted to bribery allegations that the FEC has no jurisdiction to handle.

The commissioners agreed, voting 6-0 to find no reason to believe any campaign finance laws were broken in the matter and to dismiss the complaint.

Marc Rich, a financier, fled the country after being charged with tax evasion and fraud. In one of his last acts as president, Clinton pardon the fugitive financier, touching off a firestorm.

The donations themselves weren't illegal, it was the fact that they were a bribe for a pardon that was illegal.

Although, even that may not be technically illegal, since the president's power to pardon is absolute.

Our framers never envisioned that the American people would elect to office a man as low as Bill Clinton.

And I'm "sure" our good (super-honest) Senator from AZ is going to publish this under his "campaign finance reform" "gee we did a good job" file.

Notice the demo's complain endlessly about Enron (when NOTHING illegal between Bush and Enron has ever been indicated), but ignore blatant bribery under Clinton.

Notice too that the FEC DIDN'T find that this wasn't true - merely that is wasn't illegal (as they see it in their rose-colored glasses.)

Gosh, those FBI dossiers on numerous people sure turned out to be a good catch for Hillary & Co. back when they were busy losing things inside the White House.

It seems to have caused more blindness than my Mom would attribute to looking at the pictures in Playboy.

This is the key point of the article, but alas, it is buried near the end of the story and disguised by the pro-Clinton headline. If it was a Republican, the article would be screaming about how (insert your favorite conservative here) is guilty of bribery but because of (insert your favorite conservative here), our glorious bureaucrats at the FEC are powerless to do anything about it.

That's a great reading of this non-article.

Toon/Denise didn't break election funding rules, but we have no jurisdiction into looking into what ever possessed Miss Hooters of parting with $70 G's, to the Toon and his Beast!
