EXTREME ALERT! Vote on Heritage Area land grabs TODAY!

Posted on 11/18/2003 10:49:13 AM PST by Plummz

Action Alert! Action Alert!

*** HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO VOTE ON FOUR HERITAGE AREAS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH!

The following four Heritage Areas will be voted on by the entire House of Representatives:

- H.R. 280: “The National Aviation Heritage Area” sponsored by Rep. David Hobson (R-OH)

-H.R. 1862: “The Oil Region National Heritage Area” sponsored by Rep. John Peterson (R-PA)

-H.R. 1618: “The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area” sponsored by Denise Majette (D-GA)

-H.R. 1594: “The St. Croix National Heritage Area” sponsored by Rep. Donna Christensen (D-Virgin Islands)

Every single person who receives this email MUST act. Rumor has it that Congress is planning on sweeping all four Heritage Areas through in a single vote. They also plan to vote by UNANIMOUS CONSENT which means that the VOTE WON’T EVEN BE RECORDED!!!

This is all too typical. Politicians love hiding their rotten votes that kill property rights and waste millions of tax dollars. DON’T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!

Federal money for Heritage Areas is administered through the National Park Service to preservation groups and other green minions who are directed to preserve everything within the Heritage Area that is relevant to the Heritage Area. In other words, the Park Service teams up with local greens to take away YOUR private property rights.

Once an area becomes a Heritage Area, local control over zoning and land use is lost forever. (To read more on the dangers of Heritage Areas, go to: http://www.americanpolicy.org/prop/natl-landgrab.htm

HERE’S WHAT EVERYONE MUST DO:

1. Call your Representative by using the Capitol Hill Switchboard: (202) 225-3121. Simply ask for your Representative by name.

2. Tell him or her TWO THINGS:

a) Vote AGAINST the four Heritage Areas mentioned above! They pave the way for federal zoning and trample property rights!

AND

b) Demand that the vote be recorded! The American public deserves to know where their Representatives stand on this vital issue!

This is it! Call today!

WE MUST MOVE QUICKLY!

***PLEASE FORWARD TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE***

Read the legislation. Federal money CANNOT be used to buy property in these Heritage areas.

The Federal money can be used to pay for a management plan for the Heritage area and I think it can be used for exhibits, materials and certain salaries, it can't be used to buy land, that is expressly prohibited by the law.

Land can be purchased using private funds, just like it can be whether there is a heritage area or not. A heritage area is not a National Park, they are administered by private non-profit organizations, each of which is responsible for their heritage area only. If you live inside a Heritage area or out of it, you have the same rights as a landowner. There is no boundary that changes anything regarding what you can and cannot do with your land. This program has been crafted to avoid many of the problems and abuse that were encountered with large formal parks.

Heritage areas are a relatively conservative way of linking together related historic and cultural resources without buying up tons of land and road easements etc. The areas get very little Federal money, they must raise and use private funds. If a Heritage Area is not popular enough with the local public and can't raise its own money, then it disappears.

The National Park Service does not administer these areas. They provide guidance on how to make them successful and how to get people to use them but they cannot make decisions on what if any, land to try to buy, or where to build a museum or basically anything. Those decisions are up to the State governments and the organization that administers the Heritage area itself.

Heritage area organizations are private groups. They cannot condemn property, they cannot make zoning laws, they cannot do anything except run their area.

This is a big deal about nothing.

More on Heritage areas from APC:

These Heritage Areas are de facto federal zoning. Federal money for Heritage Areas is administered through the National Park Service to preservation groups that are directed to "preserve everything within the Heritage Area that is relevant to the Heritage Area." In other words, the Park Service teams up with local greens to take away YOUR private property rights. Once an area becomes a Heritage Area, local control over zoning and land use is lost. (To read more on the dangers of Heritage Areas, go to: http://www.americanpolicy.org/prop/main.htm).

How would you like zoning and property rights decisions in YOUR town being made by green groups, local bureaucrats and the National Park Service??? THAT is the reality of National Heritage Areas!

Total BS. Perhaps you would be better served spending less time grabbing stuff off of websites and more time reading the actual transcripts of Congressional hearings on the subject.

Do you honestly think Congressman Pombo (who is a staunch property rights advocate) would have let these Heritage Areas get out of the Resources Committee if they were National Park Service land grabs ? Give me a break.

I have sat through several hearings and public meetings on Heritage Areas they are interesting and enlightening. I have heard property rights activists make good arguments and also a lot of poor and innaccurate ones, like that cited on the website. Unfortunately putting forth bad information or claiming that the United Nations is trying to take over the United States through the National Park Service, just makes the people who argue that, look like nuts.

I don't know what you do in life for a career, but it seems to me that you don't live in the country or have any country connections. I say this because most of my friends who are trying to do any natural resource development are up against a stone wall. Between the U.N., Enviro-whack clubs, and other goofball leftists, it's amazing this country still stands tall, they've been trying to kill this country for quite a while now.

Perhaps you should investigate why "us radicals" from the country are so quick to draw a sword on any "new" land takings anywhere in the U.S.A.. Bjorn Lomborg a former whack job from the left, went out to disprove what the conservatives say in regard to the environment, and has came away a new person with a much clearer view of world. My first recommendation my FRiend is to check out what the Klamath Bucket Brigade and the Klamathbasincrisis.org do in helping to educate "people out of the loop. I'm not trying to be rude, just asking you to take a peak at some of the collective data.
