[history]
More than 1,500 suspected illegal immigrants have been caught in the first week of a new Border Patrol operation at two airports and along Interstate 10.
Among them were 550 smugglers, and $750,000 worth of their cash and assets were seized, according to Andy Adame, spokesman for the Border Patrol's Tucson sector.

A Border Patrol agent chases some of the 27 people who jumped from a
passenger van on Interstate 10 near Rita Road on Thursday. The van was
traveling west from Marsh Station and was stopped as part of Operation Trans
Guard.

"More than 1,500 suspected illegal immigrants have been caught in the first week of a new Border Patrol operation at two airports and along Interstate 10." How many of these "illegal immigrants" are Mexicans or Latin Americans versus "Middle Eastern" types?
Just curious if they are catching any Al Qaeda trying to sneak in...

Encouraging, but it's like trying to keep Jello in your fist ... it just squirts out no matter hard you try. The smuggling will just shift to another area -- unless the smugglers do some very serious hard time in a Mexican jail.

Just think of how many evaded the border patrol.

How about "allowed to try?"
The Border Patrol agents CAN do their job if the harnesses are taken off of them!

Just a quick one, and then I'm out of here...it's been a long weekend.
I was on the Interstates from Sierra Vista to Flagstaff and back this weekend. The BP presence on I-10 is overwhelming. I'm not the least bit surprised by the numbers of illegals and smugglers apprehended. I am surprised by the amount of drugs they've recovered.
I guess this proves that the two go hand in hand, and it's all about the money.

"... $750,000 worth of their cash and assets were seized ... the operation has also netted 150 vehicles used for smuggling and $478,000 worth of narcotics."Other than the narcotics, should we return the seized cash and assets?
I mean, on the drug threads, people have a real problem with our asset forfeiture laws. I guess we should return the illegals with their cash and cars, huh?
And tell them not to do it again.

Sir, I'm just a poor Mexican coming to the US to make some money for my family. I only want to do the jobs you people won't do.

and $478,000 worth of narcotics.
The valuation methods police use for narcotics are suspect at best.

Oh geez. Thanks for the link to such an objective and balanced web site. There's no group I trust more for the truth than the Libertarians when it comes to drug related information.
If a person breaks the law and defrauds the IRS of $500,000 and is caught, can the government seize that $500,000? What if the person used part of that money and paid cash for an SUV? Can the government seize the SUV?
Oh, they can't? Too late? Better luck next time?
You live in a strange world, adam_az. But then again, most Libertarians do.
To: robertpaulsen
You might have actually read the article and examined the meticulous references, and learned something rather than spouting the ignorant, stupid things you have.
BTW I'm not a big L libertarian, just because I sent you to a web site run by one. There is lots of documentation about the abuse of property seizure laws out there, but I guess you'd rather bury your head in the sand and let the government seize and sell the property of citizens who haven't yet been convicted of a crime. You sound like the kind of totalitarian Janet Reno could love. I hear she's single.
I guess the only writing that's approved and legitimate to you is the holey writ from the RNC?
Fool!

"There is lots of documentation about the abuse of property seizure laws out there"No doubt.
There is also lots of documentation about the abuse of all kinds of laws out there -- only a simpleton would think that they represent the rule rather than the exception.

Holy Cow! In one week?
In one week, in one area! Can you imagine how many immigrants that means over the entrire border with Mexico over an entire year?! That's got to be a staggering number.
