I left the sidebar in (it wound up at the top of the article) because the "source" is Fr. A Nelson, who is a very serious problem. He's "retired," all right. Was kicked out of Green Bay Diocese and Rembert Weakland took him right in.

Back in the nineties, I remember reading about a group of cloistered nuns in Upstate New York(?) who were considering what sort of sacrifice they wanted to make in thanks for the Pope coming to the US for a visit.  They finally decided that they would give up the pleasure of going to see the Pope while he was in the US.
So they remained in their cloister the entire time the Pope was in the country, no doubt in glorious self-satisfaction.  The Pope never saw them and went back to the Vatican as if the nuns never existed.
Pointless exercises in self denial would be pleasing to only the pettiest of gods.

Giving up a great part of what it means to be human by forgoing sex for a lifetime thinking God will be pleased runs afoul of the nature of grace, for one thing.  God's redemption isn't bought with deeds.  The underlying assumption is that there is something wicked in the reproduction of the species that earns favor by being left aside.  Surely Jesus wasn't the Pecksniffian centuries of navel-gazers have dumped onto his followers

I'm not Catholic so have no stake in this, but wouldn't getting rid of the celibacy requirement (or somehow doing it partially, lay priests or something) help with the pedophile issue and the numbers of gay priests?

I know that it's the tradition, but seems to me you may get more quality priests, or at least one that aren't dragging along some sort of weird sexual baggage, if the recruiting pool were opened up.

Just random musings on my part,
LQ

I suspect that most of the priests who agitate for clerical marriage are not themselves the marrying kind.

And I know you are aware that Call to Action is a dissenting organization. CTA does NOT represent the views of the Catholic Church

But many others do not know this. For those I ask that you please check out the link above by clicking on dissent and then organizations.

How about just cleansing the ranks of the clergy of homosexuals?

I would be thrilled to see priests allowed to marry. I wouldn't turn to my hairdresser for advice on my carburetor, why would I turn to a priest for advice in marriage? Not everything can be fixed spirtually and by quoting scripture. Sometimes common sense derived from experience is the best there is.

Matt 19:11-12
"Not all men can receive this precept, but only to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it."

Jesus obviously stated celibacy was best for those who could accept it.

1 Cor 7:32 "The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord; but the married man is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please his wife."

It also is more practical and allows for them to become better priests.

1522: Martin Luther condemns celibacy.

Interesting sidenote.

I don't agree with everything he said/wrote but I find, after reading scripture, I agree with most of what he said. I've never read anything much by him, but I'm intrigued that I draw the same conclusions he does in most instances.

It doesn't take a scholar to read scripture.... but it takes a believer to understand.

Doubt the above? Then why does Satan believe he will win?

If, and it could be, celibacy is lifted as a requirement, what then? The left wing liberals would flood the clergy and then demand women's ordination, a theological impossibility. That would tear apart the Western Church.

It never fails to amaze me why these people just don't go join some other church, there are plenty of other Christian denominations that allow marriage or even gay relationships, if you don't like the rules of the church no one is forcing you to stay.

Its like being on a baseball team and complaining having only three strikes and your out is unfair... go make you own game with rules to your liking.
