This article makes clear the 9/11 Panel wants the President's Daily Briefings, though it backed off issuing a subpoena when the assertion of executive privilege became a possibility. It is my presumption that a court fight over an executive privilege claim could delay access to the PDBs until after the 2004 election, in which case it would have less value per the strategy proposed in the recent Rockefeller Memo.

However, the Panel would utterly fail in its responsibility to the American public if it did not conclude that national intelligence estimates must be kept apolitical and candid.

Releasing such PDBs to the Panel and to the public during an election campaign, if used or leaked for political purposes as Democrats proposed, is certain to destroy its usefulness. Future PDBs would have to be scrubbed of all details potentially embarrassing, including details that some groups would seize upon as politically offensive, or wrongly interpreted when examined with the benefit of hindsight.

Thus, the 9/11 Panel -- if it is to have any integrity or credibility -- must recommend (and should do so in advance) that PDBs never be released to those who do not have the ultimate responsibility for the defense of the American people. If partisan critics wish to quarrel with the president's judgment on national security matters, they should work to elect an alternative candidate with a better plan and more effective advisors.

In this respect, history is not be kind to Democrats. They had their chance, but squandered many opportunities. Perhaps, that is why Democrats are adopting strategies of desperation.

If President Clinton were President right now, we would all be demanding that the records be turned over. Unfortunately, we do not have ethical bipartisan leadership in Congress. There are so many of them who would sell their mother for political points. They cannot be trusted with our national security because they will sell it for political points.

Commission members say they are trying to determine how Norad responded to the first reports of the hijackings and whether the military could have done anything to prevent the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, possibly by using fighter jets to shoot down the passenger planes.

Here is pic of all the flights in the air on 9/11

I wonder which ones the commis. thinks should have shot down?

(The White House refused to provide copies of the daily intelligence reports to the joint Congressional committee last year, citing executive privilege and the need to prevent leaks of highly classified material.) The memo Hannity Read on his Radio Show only Proves there are Leaks, especially in The Democrat Committees. I only hope the President never listens to the Democrats or the NY Times. The Security of the Nation is at Stake and most of all the safety of our Brave Troops is at Stake. NY Times until J Rockefeller admits it was he that told his Staff to write that memo and until there is an Investigation into his part on the memo, there should be no Dealings with The Democrats. To the NY times Staff, and the Democrats, you people are not going to get away with twisting the Memo Topic onto the Republicans, the American People will not allow that. Accountability on Rockefeller’s Part has to come to light. Until he steps down off the Senate or is Booted there is nothing left to talk about on this topic.

With so many hardcore 'rat hacks on this commission, I can't understand why Bush would give them the time of day, let alone sensitive national security data.

Anyone else remember Richard Ben-Veniste? He worked, in some capacity, to defend the indefensible -- he tried to save Clintigula from impeachment.

Max Cleland? Bitter enough, with a serious ax to grind against President Bush and the GOP? What about Jamie Gorelick, Clintonista extraordinaire?

And the wishy washy "Republicans" like Slade Gorton and Tom Kean? Yeesh! I wouldn't trust this crew to watch paint dry -- forget about our national security!

"There is a long and tangled history between the Bush family and the elite of Saudi Arabia.
It begins in the 1970's in Houston, Texas, when George W. Bush was just starting out in his family's two businesses of politics and oil. The powerful - and very rich - Bin Laden family helped fund his first venture into oil."

"Sept. 11/2001
The attack occurs. The morning of the attack George Bush Sr. is meets with members of the Carlyle Group in Washington. Bin Laden's own brother is at the meeting. Members of the Bin Laden family are allowed to leave the U.S. without questioning two days later."

Some posters are missing the main point of this article, which isn't the daily briefing flap but about other-also being witheld-information.From the story---

"We are especially dismayed by problems in the production of the records of activities of Norad and certain Air Force commands on Sept. 11."

That material is relevant and should be produced. The timeline of the events of 9/11/01 indicates potential malfeasance in following existing sops.

This is a bunch of B.S. Since when do we have a pre 9-11 history of shooting down hijacked planes? Had that happened and 9-11 not occurred there would have been such a hue and cry that it would have been deafening. They call W a cowboy now! Could you imagine what they'd be calling him if those planes had been shot down? Remember, if we'd shot down the planes we'd still be in a 9-10 world and nobody would have REALLY known what those shoot downs had averted. What a load of crap.
