Here is the complete 2003 Generosity Index listing broken down by state and listed in order of the most generous states to the least generous states.

Additionally we've color enhanced the list to show how the states voted in the 2000 Election. Red states voted for George W Bush, blue states voted for Al Gore.

If I'm reading this chart correctly, it means the 12 least wealthy states all voted Republican in 2000.

Interesting, given that the Democrats go on ad nauseum about how they are the party of the poor and oppressed.

I'm proud but not terribly shocked to see that all of my beloved Southern states are in the top 25. I've lived in seven of them, and I can honestly say that the good people of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and West Virginia well deserve to be up there with the other generous givers of this country. I think it's interesting too to note that some of those states, notably Arkansas and Mississippi, are the states that have the least to give and yet give the most. It seems that that's always how it is. God bless them. :) Lord knows I love 'em.

There's the idea that if you don't coerce people into giving money, they'll give more of their own free will. I think this goes to prove that idea. Liberals take your money, so the average person doesn't want to give anymore. The average conservative wants to take less of your money, therefore you have more to give, and WANT TO GIVE.

I'm stunned. I live in Mass and all of the New England States are at the bottom,in fact the whole Northeast did poorly.

I live in MA as well. We are taxed to our eyebrows, so there's not alot left to be generous with. Personally, I donate most frequently to conservative causes, the Boy Scouts, and my church.

It would be interesting if someone could develop a state tax rating system which could then be correlated to giving. I'm sure there is some sort of inverse relationship. But, it must also be said that many give out of their poverty. Many of the states are in the bible belt where giving and sharing is very much a way of life.

I've seen other analysis of this data. The New England states appear to be pretty cheap, but that's not really the case.

When you consider the cost of living (high) and taxes (high) in New England, we have less money "left over" than some of the poorer states. When you look at the "money left over" / "charitable giving" ratio, the New England states are actually about average. When you look at the dollars given, the New England states are about average.

Here in CT (# 1 at something!) it's ridiculous. Sure, we make more money than others, but believe me, we are forced to give more back than those Southerners could even begin to comprehend!

I think this is key. Republican states tend to be Christian dominated states. Or more exactly Christian dominated states tend to vote republican because we can't stand the stench of the Godless democrats.

One of the main beliefs of Christianity is the tithe (10% to the Lord). The tithe is paid first. Then everything else comes out. So the states that have a higher Christian population will have a higher giving percentage.

This is one reason why the northeast, while it has a lot of money, has little giving. No Christians.

Sorry, but I lived in New England. A colder, more uncharitable, more classist, bitterer strain of people I have never met. And I don't believe your "money left over" ratio one bit. They hate the poor in MA.

Case in point: The Dedham bus stopped 50 yards away from the Dedham Mall entrance; just far enough that it couldn't be chased after by someone seeking the shelter of the awnings. And that was the Dedham Mall's core clientele. There's a hatred of the poor in Massachusetts that's almost tangible. The state brings new meaning to the term, "god-forsaken."

New York, a state taxed even higher than Massachusetts, is 4th rc=ichest; gave 7th most. Massachusetts is 3rd richest, gave 30th most!

Even New York is a hell of a lot more generous than MA.
