Longtime Orange County Republican Party boss Tom Fuentes is fending off a growing cry for his resignation, with even some once-staunch defenders now saying he has alienated too many key Republicans and is no longer an effective leader.

Fuentes, chairman of the county GOP for the past 19 years, has been at the center of building the organization into one of the country's Republican powerhouses, reliable both for its ability to raise money and to guarantee broad margins of victory for GOP candidates.

A full political assault on Fuentes was launched in 2000 by the just-formed New Majority, a county group of millionaires with a goal of gaining control of the county GOP's governing Central Committee. The committee elects the chairman every two years, and control would mean the New Majority could pick a replacement for Fuentes.

"It appears that the county party is not maximizing its relationships. Of late, the Bush administration, the state party and now the Schwarzenegger team have gone around (Fuentes) rather than working with him."

If I lived in San Diego and I don't, this fellow would get my support.

I urge all Freepers in Orange County to support Fuentes. Any one who has disagreements with Bush, Schwarzenegger, and the state party while building a strong and vital party organization is probably doing things right.

Tom has always been his own man, BUT he has also always been a friend of conservatives. He's fought off RINOs for years and kept the OCGOP a strong, conservative organization.

He needs all our help, respect, and support!
