Carrie B. (daughter of Mountains Community Hospital Resident):DOCTORS - residents of the skilled nursing facility at Mountains Community Hospital who were evacuated early Sunday morning are NOT being properly cared for. I know of at least two patients that had NONE of their medications yesterday. TWO ADDITIONAL PATIENTS of MCH HAVE DIED since the evacuation and at least one of these deaths is rather suspicious, at least based on the information I have at this time. THE MEDICAL RECORDS seem to be missing for the patients and they need to be sent to the various rest homes where these people have been evacuated. As far as I can tell, nobody from Mountains has been to check on these patients. I am extremely disappointed in the way this is being handled, especially since we asked back in JULY what the evacuation plan was in case of fire. Please do the right thing and get those medical records delivered for these people. Obviously, it is a matter of LIFE and DEATH. Thank you.

The Bear Valley Unified School District is asking that all teachers and staff report for work on Monday November 3. School classes will begin again on Tuesday November 4. You can call the information line for more information.City of Big Bear Department of Water reported that the firefighters are using large amounts of water in their fire fighting efforts. In light of this they are requesting that all residents use only the water that is essential. Also please make sure that you have turned off all your outdoor irrigation such as your sprinklers and winterize them.
The projected containment date for the “Old” fire is now expected to be November 8th at 6:00 PM. To date the “Old” fire acreage is listed by the USFS as 91,218.
There will be controlled burns of slash piles near 2N93 and 2N27. This area is south of Sugerloaf. This slash pile burn is part of a work that began last summer and is part of the ongoing forest management program. The weather conditions will assist the fire fighters to control this slash removal. Residents are being advised not to be concerned about the smoke from this area but to report any other fire activity they might observe in other parts of the valley.
The Big Bear Hospital is establishing a temporary Emergency Room in their Emergency Room parking lot utilizing an AMR mobile unit that has 3 patient beds and a small waiting area. In order to have adequate coverage for emergency medical services, AMR is providing additional advance life support units in the area. The Big Bear Hospital will be fully operational by midnight on Sunday.Currently, utilities and sanitation services are working in these areas. However, it is recommended that all residents take flashlights, portable radios, batteries, and drinking water with them to their houses. No open flame sources for light or heat should be used due to the inherent fire danger associated with these items. Charcoal barbeques are not to be used as a heat source due to the lethal amounts of carbon monoxide that can build up inside a home. Each resident needs to be prepared for winter driving conditions, so have snow chains, blankets, and water inside each vehicle.
When returning to your home, check all utilities for leaks and report them to your utility company. For information regarding the proper disposal of food in your refrigerator/freezer contact San Bernardino County Health at (909) 387-4608.
The area is still experiencing some mild fire activity in the mountain communities. Weather forecasts have change and there are no expected Santa Ana wind conditions for next week.
For those communities still under evacuation there are still a number of unsafe conditions that are being addressed. This includes downed power lines, unsafe roads due to debris and guardrails that are out. Utility companies, Cal Trans, County Roads, and other agencies are working to ensure that these areas are free of any life safety issues. State Highway 18 and State Highway 138 have experienced damage from the fire and crews are working to provide safe access. Remember when returning to your communities to drive at safe speeds and watch for crews repairing the highways.

Yesterday a caller said a man working tirelessly at an evac center had his car vandalized and windshield broken. Two calls later, a Wrightwood man called and said he would pay the glass company to replace the windshield. Several short calls later, a Hesperia glass company owner called and said thanks, but he'd replace it for free. Ordinary but exceptional people!!

6:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1Authorities announce plans to open yet another assistance center. At 8 a.m. Sunday, the former post ofice in Ramona will become a site where area residents affected by the wildfires can visit to speak with relief officials. The address is 325 Sixth St.,. Ramona.
