Clark Responds to Kosovo Questions

After his speech at the press conference in Madison, Wisconsin, on October 27, Clark took a few questions. I asked him a three-parter on the war in Kosovo, which he led.

One part dealt with the use of depleted uranium. He said there have been a lot of studies on depleted uranium, and "there is no indication it causes any trouble," except perhaps if you put something in your mouth that is covered with it.

Another part of the question dealt with a comment by British General Michael Jackson, who defied Clark's order to attack Russian troops who were beating the allies to an airport in Kosovo. General Jackson reportedly told Clark back then: "No, I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to start World War III for you."

At the press conference, Clark responded, "That comment was way out line. I did what any commander would do."

The last part of my question dealt with the speeding up of the film of the train that U.S. bombers hit as it was crossing a bridge during the Kosovo war. In briefings at the time, the U.S. military made it seem like the train was going faster than it was, so as to suggest that the pilots could not possibly have known the train was about to cross the bridge.

Clark's response: "I had no indication the film was sped up," and he added that he supported what the pilots did.

Um, that was published in The Progressive, not in the press... OK, upon further consideration, I suppose that someone could make the case that The Progressive meets the formal definition of "the press", just as Pravda met that definition.

This challenge to Clark came just because Dean is the Progressive darling. If Clark was to get the nomination, he would become a sacred cow at that point.

I wish someone would ask him about wearing the Kosova Campaign Medal.

He was the first to receive it, though, under the criterea, didn't earn it.

He only received it because of a "waiver" that was granted to him, a waiver of which the Sec. of Defense at the time nor the Army has any paper documentation.

The source may be of the left but the questions and answers where put forth rather matter of factly and were not editorialized upon. Would the NY Times have been any better? I see no difference other than the NYT would probably not have asked such questions to being with.

And we are supposed to believe that Admiral Boorda committed suicide for mistakenly wearing a medal he didn't earn... and yet, no one ever questioned Clark's medal?

One reason that I questioned whether or not these questions were being raised in "the press" was certainly that The Progressive is rather more of an advocacy organ than it is a news journal. So, if the NYT or USA Today or the Bergen Record or the Hartford Courant or the WSJ or Time Magazine or whatever had picked up on that line of questioning, then I would have been a lot more comfortable with someone using the appellation "the press" than I am with that term applied to The Progressive.

So, if the sentiment being expressed is something like, "finally the press is picking up on Clark's record and asking tough questions", I'd still have to object.

But then maybe your interpretation of "the press" is broader than mine, so you're welcome to it. As far as "in-betweener" publishing venues such as Salon or Slate or The Weekly Standard or whatever, I suppose that we could have a lively argument (but I'm not in the mood for an argument right now!)... :-)
