Kofi Annan will chide U.S. in Heinz lecture

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is expected to tell a University of Pittsburgh audience today that the United States undermined global security and the U.N. itself by unilaterally invading Iraq, but still should play a dominant role in world affairs.

Annan will remind the audience that President Franklin D. Roosevelt is responsible for the U.N.'s formation. **His speech seeks to put aside portrayals of the U.N. and the United States as rivals while still criticizing the country for unilaterally invading Iraq**, according to an advance copy of the speech.

** It sounds like 'kind of pregnant'. And there's that word again.**

Saying the United States, as the world's only remaining superpower, should have a dominant leadership role in global affairs, Annan is expected to say that power comes with great responsibilities and that the United States should have used persuasion and diplomacy in Iraq rather than military power.

The war prompted terrorist activity in Iraq (uh huh) and focused it on the U.S. military and U.N. representatives there, ( Isn't that multilateral?) Keller said. Had the United States opted for a multilateral approach,(we did) he said, "It wouldn't be the forces of terrorism against the United States. It would be the forces of terrorism against the multilateral forces of the world unified against them, and that would be a much better position to be in." (Oh yes it's all our fault)

Keller said he hopes Annan will speak in depth about human rights issues and peace-keeping missions.

**Oh yes we'll all feel good about ourselves and everything will stay the same.**

The speech touches on those topics --** calling the U.N's peace-keeping efforts in Bosnia and Rwanda shameful failures.** Still, Annan plans to reserve most of his remarks for the United States' role within the U.N. and as a world leader.

** Which means we get the blame because it's still our fault.**

Annan is a native of the West African nation of Ghana ( surely a model for the world) and has served as U.N. secretary-general for nearly seven years. He will receive the Heinz Humanitarian Award (a golden Ketchup bottle) for the U.N.'s campaign against malnourishment in developing countries and an honorary doctorate in public and international affairs from Pitt. The Heinz Foundation will present Annan with a $10,000 (why not euros?) check for UNICEF, founded in Pennsylvania in 1950.
