Hosp under fire for Boudin hire

Angry off-duty cops demonstrated outside St. Luke's Hospital yesterday to protest the hiring of paroled killer Kathy Boudin - 22 years to the day since three men were slain in the infamous Brink's robbery.

About two dozen police officers carried signs outside the upper Manhattan hospital that read: "Kill three people and get a job at St. Luke's," and shouted, "St. Luke's hires murderers."

Boudin, 60, walked out of prison last month after serving nearly 22 years for the ambush that left two police officers and a security guard dead.

Most of the protesters were cops from Rockland County, where the victims were gunned down at the Nanuet Mall.

"There are three people who are dead who'll never have the opportunities she has," said John Hanchar, 35, a Rockland cop and nephew of one of the slain officers, Sgt. Edward O'Grady.

A St. Luke's spokesman yesterday confirmed that Boudin had been hired to do HIV counseling as part of a privately funded program.

"She definitely has been hired," said Jim Mandler, a hospital spokesman. "The start date has not been determined yet."

During the robbery, Boudin and her cohorts killed the guard and stole $1.6 million. When their truck was stopped in Nyack, gang members burst out of the back of the vehicle and fired at two police officers with automatic weapons.

Protesters scoffed yesterday at the idea of giving her a second chance.

"I believe Ms. Boudin should have stayed in prison the rest of her life," said NYPD Officer Mary O'Mahoney, 38.

This is exactly why I support (albeit reluctantly) the death penalty. A life sentence doesn't mean what it says, and "Life without parole" is even more of a joke, as there will always be the possibility of some ethically-challenged maroon, working on a parole board, in a governor's chair, or the like which will render such a sentence into a lie...
