Economics trumps (geo)politics in the minds of Western checker players. In the minds of our chess player enemies, it does not. We were lucky to win WW-II, and did not do quite as well in the Cold War is claimed by many. Look at the resurgence of anti American cabals. Some within our own land. Is it not patriotic to point this out? Personally, I think we have more to learn from Von Clausewitz than from M. Friedman. That's not to say we should avert ourselves from learning from Adam Smith, and, Edmund Burke!
