My wife (as a joke, and under the name "Muggs Polecat III") subscribed me to the email list for the Arianna campaign when Ms. Huffington jumped into the recall race a couple months ago.
Here's the email I received this morning. Evidently, she spent a more on her campaign than she took in. (Which is undoubtedly how she would have handled California's finances in the unlikely event of her election.)
I'm going to suggest she get some money from her buddy, Gay Davis. I've heard he was pretty good at raising campaign cash. Or maybe she can get Cruz to put in a good word for her with the Indian tribes -- maybe they'll help her out.
"Dear Muggs,
I am writing to ask for your help in retiring the debt accrued by Arianna Huffington's campaign.
Despite being severely underfunded, Arianna's run had a major impact on the just completed recall election.
Arianna consistently and effectively brought attention to a wide range of progressive issues, including renewable energy, universal health care, and the need to close outrageous corporate tax loopholes.
Most importantly, she succeeded in putting the media spotlight on the corrupting influence of special interest money on our democracy -- and put forth a viable solution to the problem when she filed her Clean Elections initiative, which, if enacted, will create a system of publicly financed campaigns.
In addition, Arianna used the platform of her campaign to effectively hammer home -- in speeches, TV appearances, and in the nationally televised debate -- the irrefutable connection between California's budget crisis and the failed economic policies of the Bush administration. She also laid out the many other ways the Bush White House has been waging war on the people of California, including contemptible attempts to rollback vital protections of our air and water.
And then, with the fate of the recall on the line, she unselfishly pulled out of a race she realized she couldn't win and devoted herself to tirelessly traveling up and down the state trying to stop the recall, Prop 54, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
All of this, of course, cost a great deal of money and has left Arianna's campaign facing a debt of $235,000. So I'm reaching out to you, and asking you to dig deep and contribute whatever you can to help pay off this financial obligation:

If Arianna can't afford $235k, she could always sell her house and become one with the common people.

Maybe she can get her husband to led her the money. Or maybe he can get his husband to lend her the money.

I wonder if Arianna would help me retire my debt...I expect not. She can expect the same from me.

She should have an "Ariana's Bake Sale". Plenty of her own homemade baklava, with fruit of course

Dear Arianna:
Have you ever considered the profitable and exciting life of a Las Vegas callgirl?

Yeah. I only need about $150K to pay off my house, car, and student loan. If she agrees to pay off my debt, I will help find people to pay off hers.

This is shameless! She's a wealthy woman. Why would she need to raise this money from others when she can write the checks from her own account right now? Have all politicians fallen this low?

I had no idea there would be such an outpouring of heartfelt support for Arianne here on FreeRepublic!
To: Califelephant
Arianna's claims to have had any influence at all are sheer fraud, to get money out of the hicks and rubes and fools. Of course in this case, the hicks and rubes and fools are the so-called progressives, so I don't much care if they fall for this shameless balderdash.

She already got a new muffler for her Lexus, what more does she want?
To: Califelephant
I might be willing to contribute something if she is willing to have her mouth stapled shut for the rest of her life.
What a joke a couple of hundred thou is chump change for this woman.

Dear Arianna,
I've just learned that your campaign is facing a debt of $235,000. I read about your misfortune in a post on a website called the FreeRepublic.com. I am sympathetic and I have some GREAT NEWS.
I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance.
Sincerely,
Kidd
